Orlando: Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

1. Orlando: Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

The source of our “living lights”—bioluminescence—is dinoflagellates,  single-celled organisms common in marine environments. Each bioluminescent dinoflagellate flashes only a fraction of a second when disturbed by water movement, but its high concentrations in the warm Indian River water create beautiful bluish-white trails of light caused by swimming fish and paddling kayakers. A swimming manatee may be completely concealed in a spectacular, other-worldly cloud of “living light!” Upon arriving at the park, check in with the trip leaders which includes signing a mandatory release of liability and assumption of risk form. You will be outfitted with a life jacket, kayak, and paddle. After some brief instruction, we will paddle as a group in search of the “living lights.” Most tours last a couple of hours, however, if the bioluminescence is super bright and dolphins or manatee show up on the scene, well . . . time just doesn’t matter.

My party consisted of 17 yo son who is avid kayaker and my 15 yo daughter (and myself) who had never gone kayaking before. We loved it! Gary and Carston were excellent guides, very knowledgeable and informative. Love the fact that they started with a few minutes of instruction in how to properly paddle, turn, back up etc. Son was in single and was able to zoom around fine. Daughter and I were in tandem and we did struggle a bit against the wind and current but never to the point we had to stop or get help. And I have a bad shoulder. So if we can do it, anyone can! The bioluminescence is simply magical. Anything that moves in the water : your hand, paddle, a fish or dolphin swimming by... all leaves this blue pixie dust looking wake. It’s just gorgeous. We paddled up to the little island and you can also get out and swim or walk around. I would definitely have towels waiting in your car as the water runs down the paddle and lands pretty much straight in your lap.

The trip was great fun. Everything was perfectly organized. The supervisors gave a lot of information about nature. You get very wet and should have spare clothes in the car. Be sure to wear shoes that can get wet. (slippers)

Amazing adventure!!! A must see! Tour guides were wonderful and full of knowledge!

Bill was amazing and the water was sooo cool! Bucket list for sure! Thank you!!
