Full description

Join a hike along the Caminito del Rey, a one-direction walkway that starts in Ardales and ends at Álora. Follow your guide as they tell you the history of the walkway and Desfiladero de Los Gaitanes Canyon. Walk across the famous footbridge and admire breathtaking landscapes.

This walking tour begins at Conde de Guadalhorce Dam, a water reserve in Malaga. As you hike, learn about the history of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Canyon, carved by the Guadalhorce River, from your guide. See how the construction of a water channel from the reservoirs in the north to El Chorro included building a pathway for maintaining the channel. The path is known as El Caminito del Rey (King's Little Pathway), inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII.

Encounter a footbridge over 3 kilometers long, built on the walls of the Gaitanes Gorge (Desfiladero de los Gaitanes).

Experience beautiful natural spots in the province. During some stretches, the route reaches heights of up to 101 meters. Although the best-known stretch of the route is the footbridge, the total journey of the Caminito del Rey is 7.7 kilometers (4.8 miles).

A good afternoon's walk, with some superb views, led by a knowledgeable, friendly, enthusiastic guide, who kept us interested and entertained with his knowledge of the trail, as we walked along it. He spoke to the group in both Spanish and English. As this was during the Covid pandemic, he advised when to have masks on, when it was obligatory and when safe to remove them. He took photos for us at some viewpoints - which he pointed out along the way. The trek is nowhere near the scary walk you might assume, at least for me. The walkways (re-built and opened in 2015) are sturdy, railed, well maintained and we never felt in any danger at any point, despite apparently being known as "the most dangerous walkway in the world". Our group had people from ages around the twenties to sixties, generally fit, but as long as you can walk for what will be about 3 hours, you are fine. Remember to have 1.55 euro, so that at the end you can get the shuttle bus to return you to the start point!

A great English speaking guide (Paul) took a relatively small group of ten on the walk. He was excellent, humorous, informative and responsive. The setup was professional with good security and pandemic measures well up to par. The scenery is beyond words even for one like me who’s used to Lofoten and the Arctic. Simply stunning, even though that’s cliche. Physically the walk itself is about 7 km and not strenuous but people with fear of heights should not do it. There are several stretches where you feel you have nothing beneath you for a hundred metres or so, and there is one suspended (and transparent) bridge over a deep gorge. To me those were boons, but I know others who don’t feel that way. Highly recommended.

Wouwh genoten van deze wandeling! Práchtige natuur! Heel veilig.
