The Uffizi Gallery is a must-see when visiting Florence. Built in 1560 and known as the world's oldest museum, it was designed by the famous renaissance architect Giorgio Vasari. The grand duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de Medici decided to re-establish the authority of the Medici family.

After Cosimo I eliminated most of his rivals, he gave an office to the rest to keep an eye on them. In fact, Uffizi means offices. After his death, his children lost interest in politics. His eldest son, Francesco I, brought his private collection of artworks and made the Uffizi his private museum.

It was a complete dream, the guide was very knowledgeable and the information was precise and insightful. She was very charismatic and offered all kinds of additional information when asked for details and volunteered very curious facts during the conversations.

We were a small group, we did not wait anywhere. We skip the line to get our tickets, enter the gallery and pass the screening. Our guide show us the most significant paintings, always picked the right place in front of the painting to gave us information about the painter and the masterpiece itself. The tour lasted for 2 hours. If we had entered by ourselves we would be wondering around without admiring half of the thinks we saw.

Amazing - definitely worth starting with a guide - she had so much information about the artwork and skipped past areas which she didn’t think would be interesting, so we didn’t spend endless time looking at each piece but could go back at the end of the tour and look at rooms we skipped.
