Full description

Take a hike through Samaria Gorge with pickup in Malia and Heraklion. Trek through this impressive gorge, known for being the longest in Europe. Make a stop at the Plateau of Omalos, admire the mountains of the gorge, and take an unforgettable journey through Cretan nature.

Get picked up in the morning from your designated pickup point and head towards Omalos. Once there, make sure you have all the equipment and take the chance to buy some supplies before entering into the gorge.

Begin the trek, and feel the impressiveness of the longest gorge in Europe. Take in the surrounding views of the White Mountains, admire the small river that runs through it, and catch sight of the Cretan wild goats, commonly known as Kri-Kri.

At the exit, find yourself by the Libyan Sea in the village of Agia Roumeli. Explore this beautiful and isolated village, nestled between huge rocks and the expansive sea. Enjoy a relaxing and refreshing swim at the beach, and have some lunch in a small local tavern.

Later, embark on a boat that takes you back to Chora Sfakion. There, catch the bus that returns back to the resort.

The transfer went very well, great organization. We made two stops to eat in the morning to go to the toilet… For the return one stop where we offered a barbecue. Otherwise wow! The walk was very hard honestly. But I have absolutely no regrets, great experience.. and then the setting was magnificent and super impressive. And then at the end we took a little cruise that takes us back to the parking lot. Departure from agia roumeli, the boat passes by the village of loutro.

An amazing and memorable day. An early start, a late finish, but completely worth it. Our advice, good walking shoes (boots if you have room in your suitcase!) are a must, as its a rough old path most of the way. You can top up your water bottle at plenty of stops on the way, so you don't need to carry everything you need for the day from the start.

The hike through the gorge is an unforgettable experience. It is fascinating to see what nature has created. The tour was well organized and the multilingual (English, German, French, Dutch) guide explained everything well. However, it would be nice if the description of the offered tour would state HOW long it actually ONLY takes the bus... we were picked up at 5 a.m. in the morning and were back at 11 p.m., of which we have more than 9 hours driving spent. It could possibly be better organized that not every hotel is approached individually, but the people are brought from the hotels to a collection point and from there continue by coach. There were regular breaks, although it has to be said that the stops were rather uninviting and the toilets were not in an attractive condition (no toilet paper, no light in the evening, the doors could not be locked in some cases).
