Full description

Visit Alkmaar's traditional Cheese Market - the oldest in the Netherlands! On this 2.5-hour small group walking tour, you will learn all about Alkmaar's most well known attraction: the Cheese Market! Also wander through Alkmaar's medieval center and along pretty cobbled streets and picturesque canals. Watch the traditional way of trading cheese how it was done centuries ago. Spend approximately 45 minutes at the Cheese Market which is ample time to see everything. While you are there, learn all about the market's history and listen to your guide explaining what is happening in front of you! If you feel like it, you can try a variety of Dutch cheeses and even buy some to bring home with you. Then, walk through the cobbled streets of Alkmaar and along its picturesque canals. Stop at the Molen van Piet (Piet's Windmill) for the perfect Dutch photo opportunity! See some of Alkmaar's most famous buildings such as the Grote Sint Laurenskerk (Great St Lawrence Church), the Stadhuis (City Hall) and the Waag (the Weigh House). On this tour you will get an insight into Dutch culture and way of life through the eyes of a foreigner living in Alkmaar, as your tour guide originally stems from Canada.

Friday Cheese Market and City Tours will depart from outside the Alkmaar Train Station at 9 AM (to the left of the stairs)
Participants must be able to be on their feet for 2.5 hours and be able to walk approximately 4 kilometers
Due to uneven surfaces, this tour is not recommended for those with walking disabilities or using a wheelchair
This tour will operate in all weather conditions - please dress appropriately
Alkmaar Cheese Market Tours are available on Friday mornings in July and August from the end of March to the end of September

My partner & I had a wonderful tour of Alkmaar and its cheese market with Jennifer. She was a super guide, so knowledgeable and friendly that we felt we'd known her for ages. Because of the cold weather she took us to a cosy cafe which was like entering someone's home, for super coffees and homemade apple pie. For a fun time in Alkmaar Jennifer is the best.

Wonderful adventure! Our guide Jen made the cheese market experience both educational and entertaining. Our small group felt we were seeing the cheese market and town with a friend versus a tour guide. The train stop meeting place was perfect and gave us time to explore the town on our own pace is opposed to being on a tour schedule. Would absolutely recommend this small group morning tour with Jen.

It was an amazing tour. Had so much fun watching how the cheese market operates and tasted some of the best cheese. And the guide Jennifer was so cool and awesome. She did a great job and thanks to her we got the chance to go in and check on how the weighing rooms operates and also had a good view of the market from inside. She let us stay in the market as much as we wish and then she took us on a nice tour around the city as well. Loved the tour
