Full description
Discover the medieval town of Altamura with a licensed guide. Visit the historic center passing through an ancient gateway to enter the city and explore the architectural beauty of the churches of San Biagio, San Nicola dei Greci and the cities cathedral, the only church built by Frederick II throughout the Middle Ages.
Among the alleys of the center you will be surprised to find a wine museum, dating back to 1500, which showcases the treasures of the Altamurana wine tradition. Located behind Altamura’s cathedral, it is one of the oldest buildings in the historic city center. This fantastic place is divided into two large spaces. On the ground floor, you can admire some special pieces, like the impressive 17th century wood press and a series of utensils and equipment of that age.
A stairway then leads you to down to a stone cave that has perfect temperature and humidity for wine fermentation and preservation. After exploring all the museum has to offer, enjoy a wine tasting, that consists of a glass of Primitivo of Altamura (bottles aged in the natural stone cave), a selection of cheeses, focaccia and other dairy products.
