Catacombs of Rome: Bus Tour with Capuchin Crypt

8. Catacombs of Rome: Bus Tour with Capuchin Crypt

Beneath the sun-baked streets of Rome lie cool, shadowed spaces that hide layer upon layer of history. Beat the heat with air-conditioned travel and access directly down into three different, but equally fascinating archaeological finds. Admire the hallowed catacombs where, beneath their persecutors’ feet, early Christians practiced their forbidden faith. Almost 2,000 years ago, this network of secret tunnels doubled as a place of worship and burial ground. As you explore tombs carved out of the solid rock, your guide – a local, expert English-speaker – will relate the fascinating history of this sacred spot. Visit the Capuchin Crypt. Capuchin monks used the bones of nearly 4,000 of their brothers to decorate this somber space in intricate floor-to-ceiling designs, lending it the macabre nickname of "the Bone Chapel". Your guide will tell you the theories, but it’s up to you to draw your own conclusions about the meaning of the crypt’s robed skeletons and vertebrae chandeliers. Open your eyes to the city’s hidden side – and you’ll never see Rome the same way again.

Our family, had a wonderful time with our guide, Klaas, despite heavy rain and a stop to change a punctured tyre. Since there were only 4 of us, Klaas took a lot of time to ensure our safety when crossing the road, share with us his knowledge about Rome and his own experience riding bicycle solo from Europe to Asia. We stopped by to have enjoyable lunch, simple but delicious pasta with great conversation with our guide. After we reached the end of the tour, Klaas shared with us his Dutch snacks. I would recommend Klaas and this company to everyone. They are very professional and even offered to refund us in full, when we were already at their shop, if we chose to cancel it because of the rain forecast. You can tell that they are good people and we glad that we went ahead with it although our shoes were soaking wet and we had to buy 3 new shoes . The e-bikes were in good conditions with front pocket to keep your phone, poncho and water bottles. 5 stars tour

Excellent tour that takes you to so many interesting places in just half a day. The city walls, aqueducts, catacombs, Via Appia, etc. One of the best things we did in Rome! Highly recommended. Prepare for a bumpy ride on Via Appia, but the e-mountain bikes make it easy and fun. Did this tour with my 13-year old and he had a huge smile in his face the whole day. It’s a great activity for families with teens as well.

So fun and clever! Geared for kids, but as a very physically active middle aged person, I still had a lot of fun running around with the youngsters and doing a little swordplay.

That was my best experience in Rome so far. The Via Appia is a stunning ensemble of nature and culture. And the best way to experience them is by bike.

Fascinating. Laura was a wonderful guide telling the story of the catacombs.
