Full description
Set off on an exciting journey of discovery with this fantastic full-day trip to the beautiful Meteora caves. After being picked up by your driver/ guide from Athens or Piraeus, sit back and relax as you drive through the Greek mainland. Take in the stunning countryside as you travel and snap some photos. Have the chance to enjoy lunch at a nearby village on the way.  Reach the Meteora caves, where an unforgettable experience awaits you. Comprising of sandstone and conglomerate, the caves at Meteora are thought to have been inhabited as early as 50,000 years ago. In the 9th century, monks began inhabiting them again and in the 14th century the first monasteries were built. Nowadays, Meteora is home to one of the most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. As you explore, see all six of these monasteries, built on large naturally-formed pillars. Close to the city of Kalambaka, Meteora is waiting to fascinate you with breathtaking views and unique natural beauty. After your day of exploration, relax once more as you're transferred back to Athens or Piraeus.

Punctual pick-up and long but comfortable drive with a Mercedes van to the monasteries. Was able to visit 4 monasteries on site (practically never all of them are open at the same time) and see all the monasteries from the outside. A decent ascent in a monastery, otherwise everything is relatively easy with normal fitness (done in autumn when it's not so hot). Guide also told interesting things. Before the return trip we ate delicious Greek together in a traditional village restaurant.

Absolutely brilliant day with a great driver and guide. It’s a long drive but worth it to see these amazing monasteries which is something completely different. We visited the most peaceful monastery first which was a reasonably strenuous climb up but well worth the effort. We then visited a more populated one which was nonetheless interesting and the artwork fascinating (still a reasonable climb!). The last Stephens did not need any climb, and was by far the most populated and visited. The museum there was very interesting and the artwork in the church intricate and could have spent an extra hour or so here it was so interesting.

We really enjoyed the whole experience. Meteora was like nothing we have ever seen before. Peter, our driver/guide was very attentive and helpfull. The knowledge he shared with us made it all the more special. I am 85 years old and it was a long day, 14 hrs! Peter's patience and caring attitude was much appreciated as was his driving skills.
