Private Walking Tour of Avignon

1. Private Walking Tour of Avignon

Walk through one of the most charming cities in southern France on this 2-hour tour of Avignon. See the impressive Palace of the Popes and the famous bridge at Pont St. Bénezet as you explore the city's sidewalk cafes, elegant squares, and delightful tree lined boulevards. Surrounded by imposing medieval walls, Avignon was the capital of Christendom in the 14th century, with seven successive popes making the city their home. In an attempt to rival Rome's Papacy, Avignon's architects designed many of the city's magnificent features, including the superbly preserved defensive walls and the monumental Palace of the Popes ̶ one of the most important medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. From lesser-known attractions in Avignon to its most renowned sites, you will be accompanied by an expert local guide who will share with you the history and secrets of this UNESCO World Heritage listed city.

Chateauneuf du Pape: Private Guided Walking Tour

2. Chateauneuf du Pape: Private Guided Walking Tour

Enjoy a pick-up from your hotel in Avignon or surrounding area (within 25 kilometers of Avignon) by private vehicle and head to the village of Châteauneuf du Pape, which is by far the most prestigious wine-making village in the Rhône Valley. From the ruins of the medieval castle that crowns the village you can enjoy excellent views of the surrounding mountains, of the Rhône river, and the sea of vines covering the hills. Leave the village by foot, walking on the farming tracks between the celebrated vines of Grenache and Syrah, leading through rolling terrain, from one estate to another. Along the way learn all about the centuries-old history of wine-making in the region, and stop for a wine-tasting. Also enjoy a picnic in the vines (picnic/lunch not included). After the walk is complete you will return back to your hotel in Avignon. The walk is about 7 kilometers long, with about 2 hours total of walking time, on somewhat rocky tracks. Pick-up is at 9 AM directly at your hotel by your guide in Avignon. The pick-up time can be adjusted if necessary. You will need walking shoes (hiking boots aren't necessary), sun protection (hat, sun cream: there's no shade), a bottle of water, a small backpack (30 liters is a good size) and a picnic lunch. There are no restaurants/shops along the walking paths, so you will need to prepare a picnic beforehand. You will return to Avignon around 5 PM.

Les Baux: Private Guided Walking Tour from Avignon

3. Les Baux: Private Guided Walking Tour from Avignon

Start your tour with a pick-up from your hotel in Avignon or surrounding area and then head to the windswept Alpilles mountains. Far from the tourist crowds, your expert guide will lead you on an easy walk along the thyme-laden crests, on one of the most spectacular paths in Provence. With aerial views of the famed olive groves and even the Mediterranean Sea to the south, the rocky paths wind through shrub vegetation and pass lone cypress trees: just as Van Gogh painted them during his stay in these mountains. We visit a secret 3000 year-old fort before reaching the medieval village of Les Baux de Provence, set high above the valley. Enjoy some free time to meander through the cobbled streets and enjoy a relaxing lunch before completing the walk. After the walk, visit a local olive mill for a tasting and to learn about local olive oil production. Set just beside the village of Les Baux is a former limestone quarry, converted into a stunning light and picture show: Carrières de Lumières. This activity takes just under an hour and is not included in the price. However, you can choose to visit this if you wish at additional cost. The walk is 7 kilometers long in total, and you can expect up to three hours of walking time along the trails. The paths are easy to walk on, but rocky: you can choose to wear walking boots but running shoes are sufficient if you're used to walking on uneven surfaces.  Pick-up is at 9 AM directly at your hotel by your guide in Avignon, or in the surrounding area (within a radius of 25 kilometers from Avignon). The pick-up time can be adjusted, if necessary. A return transfer is included to your hotel in Avignon, arriving at around 5 PM.

From Avignon: Private Walking Tour from Gordes to Sénanque

4. From Avignon: Private Walking Tour from Gordes to Sénanque

You'll be picked up directly from your hotel in Avignon by private vehicle and transfer (less than 1-hour) to the picturesque village of Gordes, listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. After exploring the stunning medieval streets, your guide will lead you along the walking paths lined with ancient stone walls. On seldom-used trails and through the thyme-laden hills, you will reach the 12th century Sénanque Abbey, completely intact, and a jewel of Romanesque architecture. It sits in a hidden valley framed by lavender fields. You will be able to visit the Abbey if you wish (there are regularly scheduled guided tours lasting an hour, not included). Beyond the abbey, climb on a path with magnificent aerial views of the ancient buildings. You will reach a pass before a leisurely descent back to Gordes, finishing your loop. The fully guided walk will be 10 kilometers in total and require approximately 3-hours of walking time on easy but rock paths.

What people are saying about Avignon

I had a perfect guide!

It was a problem to find the guide around meeting point as the agency provided the wrong telephone number of mine and the lady couldn’t contact me until I wrote the message to them asking where is tge guide. The guide was perfect! Very knowledgeable and made us very good excursion! We were very satisfied! The thing that we were two of us only and the price was 220€ for two hours ... a bit expensive

Claude was a very knowledgeable guide who showed us the highlights of the old city in Avignon. We got some interesting history plus information about local and current highlights.

It was wonderful to have a local guide teaching us about the area! She was patient with our teenagers and kept them as engaged as possible:).

A perfect mix ...

... from culture and history, from small discoveries and hidden pearls. It was really a nice tour with a super friendly leader

Marc is a learned and friendly guide Excellent visit of a city that we already knew but about which Marc taught us a lot
