Full description
Avila is one of Spain’s oldest cities, and surrounded by well-preserved walls dating from the 11th century, it resembles an immense castle. The old quarters are home to a number of important Romanesque churches, Gothic palaces, and the city’s 12th-century Gothic cathedral, which is also fortified. On this full-day excursion from Madrid, you’ll see the exterior of the Avila Cathedral, the Romanesque Basilica of San Vicente, and visit the Plaza Mayor. Take a short walk through the city’s old streets to the Convent of Ste. Therese. Continue on to Segovia, a city rich in historical monuments. See the magnificent Roman Aqueduct from the time of Emperor Augustus. The elegant Cathedral, and its Alcazar fortress, the most spectacular castle in Spain, are among the highlights. Both Avila and Segovia are listed as Heritage of Mankind cities.

The guide was very insightful, and this tour allowed us to see beautiful sights outside Madrid without the hassle of figuring out travel. I would have appreciated if we had more time at the aqueducts. Our bus was too full to tour Alcazar together, which means we had to wait for the other group to go through the fortress: this resulted in us having only ~15 minutes to enjoy the aqueduct before lunch. Though the gourmet lunch & wine was very delicious, in hindsight, I would have omitted that option and gotten a quick gyro-to-go so that I had more time at the aqueduct.

While on the 1.25 hour drive from Madrid to Segovia, our guide Sylvia rapidly explained things first in Spanish and then in English. Unfortunately she spoke so quickly I didn’t understand much of what she told us. We wore an earphone for the walking portion of the tour which wanted to fall off my ear but allowed her voice to come in loud and clear. On other tours I’ve found it helpful for the guide to have the guests to introduce themselves and their countries—that was not done in this case though some of us did chat a bit with each other. I apparently booked my tour with a meal that the others had not—so I dined alone at a cafe that Sylvia led me to. I chose the meal upgrade to the cochinillo—I’m not sure it was worth the added expense as I’ve nothing to compare it to. Had I to do it over again, I’d have taken my chances on my own in choosing a spot to dine in Segovia. By the time lunch ended there wasn’t much free time remaining to shop so I chose to walk along the aqueduct instead.

Visiting cities is good. The guide Núvia was very attentive and friendly. The first part of the trip was in Segovia with lunch in the city. The second part was in Ávila, the visit was faster because it is held after lunch and practically everything in the city was closed for their basket after lunch. The bus is comfortable and the journey is smooth.
