Necropolis of Kings and Queens: Basilica of St. Denis Tour

2. Necropolis of Kings and Queens: Basilica of St. Denis Tour

Hear about the Catholic legend of St. Denis, the first bishop of Paris, who was decapitated. Holding his head under his arm, he gave a sermon while walking to the site where the basilica was to be built some 900 years later. Saint Louis selected this site for his family’s tombs, and the basilica now contains a collection of intricately sculpted sarcophagi. Explore the official necropolis of the French Monarchy on this 2.5-hour guided tour. In all there are tombs of 43 kings and 32 queens, from the 7th-century King Dagobert through Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. A guided visit of the site takes you through much of the history of Paris itself.

Saint Denis is a link in the chain of history. I could not dwell on the details because I was guiding my parents, but the light, the space, the spirit of the ancient rulers, everything envelops you in charm. The only flaw is not being able to leave the suitcase in a deposit at the entrance. So I had to drive my mother and then my father to always have a luggage keeper out!

Beautiful piece of history in the unproper location. Saint Denis, the city, is crazy, the feeling of unsecurity is so strong that it somehow ruins the pleasure of visiting the cathedral. Nevertheless, Saint Denis Basilica is amazing, it surely worth the trouble to go there.

Wonderful tour with a very knowledgeable guide, Humberto. He knew his history and his art history--both essential for a tour of such an important site!

The Church itself was beautiful, but the crypts were next level! Amazing and so interesting! This and the Louvre were my 2 favorite things in France!

StDenis was what we expected. Amazing historical site. Also, attended AM mamas which was lovely , as well.
