Full description

Experience a special East Side boat cruise, 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Besides numerous sights in the old and new center of Berlin, see also the recent changes in the area surrounding the East Side Gallery.

The roundtrip boat cruise starts at the pier by the old stock exchange building, near the Hackersche Höfe. Relax onboard the boat as you listen to detailed information in English and German and enjoy a delicious food service (own expense). After passing by the cradle of Berlin – Mühlendamm Lock – the tour continues on past Radialsystem V, an energy forum, Berlin Ostbahnhof and the Mercedes Benz Arena. Pass under the Oberbaum Bridge into the east harbor with its many new residents including Universal Music, MTV, Coca Cola, and Label 1 and 2. You will also pass by the Badeschiff at Arena Treptow and the Molecule Man sculpture. Journey back to Berlin-Mitte and see the Nikolaiviertel, the palace construction site, and the Humboldt Forum. The famous Museum Island begins at the Berlin Cathedral. Pass under the Weidendammer Bridge to reach the area around Friedrichstrasse with the Schiffbauerdamm, the Tränenpalast (Palace of Tears), and Friedrichstrasse station. Cruise past the government district where you will see the Reichstag building and the Federal Chancellery. You will also see the most modern railway stations in Europe from the water – Berlin Central Station. Pass by Bellevue Palace – the seat of the Federal President – before heading back to the starting point, the old stock exchange building.

Overall it was good. We probably enjoyed the hop on hop off bus more. The ticket is an issue. We bought in advance but realized what although we had a QR code we still had to join a queue to change for a ticket. This means it didn't help buying in advance. Others that turned up with ore buying got on first. The biggest bug bear was a group of about 6 people went to board without queing but they were sent to desk to change which meant queing like the rest of us same purchasing people. But one of the group stayed at gate. Somehow!!!! The guy at the check in reserved a whole table for them. How was that allowed I wonder. We then even though we queued struggled to get a to seat upstairs but they somehow even though way behind us got preferred treatment. Not good!. The service by the young lady was absolutely excellent. Great service great memory.

The boat was clean and the crew was top notch. We had a storm pop up on us and we had to ditch the top deck for the inner deck for about 20 minutes, but when the storm was over, the deck hand was up there drying everything off. The commentary was just enough - not too much and not too little. The scenery was amazing and we got to see so much more than we would have with only a walking tour.

Relaxing and interesting floating view of Berlin with good commentary (audio guide). You get a different sense of Berlin than you would get as a tourist on land. I had signed up for what I thought was the East Side Boat Cruise, but this turned out to be the standard 2.5 hour boat cruise. Food service was limited, but the experience was fun.
