Bracciano: Odescalchi-Orsini ancient Castle Tour with Lunch

1. Bracciano: Odescalchi-Orsini ancient Castle Tour with Lunch

Anyone who loves the Middle Ages with its atmospheres, castles, knights and mysterious stories cannot miss this shore-excursion to Bracciano. Odescalchi&Orsini Castle is located about 50 km southeast of Civitavecchia on the shores of Lake Bracciano. Built between 1470 and 1485 under the guidance of Virginio Gentile Orsini stands one of the most beautiful, impressive and above all original Renaissance residences in Europe. It underwent many transformations over the centuries due to its strategic position at the gates of Rome and disputed between the most noble and wealthy families of the city, such as the Colonna and the Borgia. Pope Alexander VI Borgia even confiscated the Castle in 1496. In 1679 the Odescalchi family, whose members included Pope Innocent IX, took over from the Orsinis. Visit the more than 20 rooms on the Piano Nobile, the paintings, the furnishings and the splendid medieval kitchen with armory. Admire the splendid landscape overlooking the lake from the mighty towers and at the end enjoy a walk in the ancient village of Bracciano. Today, the castle has now become a famous location for parties, with actor Tom Cruise choosing it for his wedding with Katie Holmes.  After you have taken the time to explore the castle, take a short walking tour through the historic center of Bracciano, and finally reach the Belvedere della Sentinella.  Once there, take the unique opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking view of the lake and the surrounding countryside below. Finally, round off your tour by replenishing your energy with lunch in a typical restaurant with local products.

From Rome:Private Day Trip to Bracciano, Caprarola & Viterbo

3. From Rome:Private Day Trip to Bracciano, Caprarola & Viterbo

You'll begin your day with a private car transfer from your hotel to picturesque Bracciano, a warren of medieval alleys overlooking the crystalline waters of a volcanic lake. Bracciano is renowned for its truly spectacular castle, one of Italy's most thrilling Renaissance landmarks where jaw-dropping panoramic views and perfectly preserved frescoes are the order of the day. A world away from the chaotic bustle of Rome, Bracciano is the ideal tonic if you feel you need of a change of pace from the capital. After a stop for lunch in a traditional restaurant in the shadow of the castle’s ramparts, we’ll head to the equally fascinating town of Viterbo a little further to the north. Known as the Città dei Papi, it was here that the Popes called home when Rome was in the midst of urban decline in the 13th century. Relics of those distant glory years stud the sleepy historic centre today. Walk in the footsteps of the pontiffs through the echoing halls of the Palazzo dei Papi, whose elegant arched loggia is an architectural delight, and learn the bizarre tale of the longest papal conclave in history - resolved only after three years of deliberation when the locals resorted to removing the palace’s roof in order to be rid of the cardinals. A rich array of imposing churches, tinkling fountains and picture-perfect vine strewn alleys, Viterbo’s charming medieval quarter is one of the best preserved in all of Europe. The final stop on our tour through Tuscia is nearby Caprarola. Picturesquely nestled in a spectacular range of volcanic hills, Caprarola is home to the jaw-dropping Villa Farnese. A massive fortified palace dominating the surrounding countryside, the unique pentagonal design was the brainchild of Renaissance genius Antonio da Sangallo – forget the Arlington version, this pentagon was around 400 years before ground was broken at the DoD! The spectacular interiors are covered with incredible frescoes recounting the deeds of the Farnese clan, as well as extraordinary 16th-century world maps in the Sala del Mappamondo. The elegantly twisting central Scala Regia is one of the most stunning spiral staircases ever constructed, and the leafy gardens outside are a refreshing delight. The Villa Farnese in Caprarola is perhaps Italy’s single most impressive hidden gem, and is the perfect way to conclude this special off-the-beaten path itinerary. Afterwards your private driver will accompany you back to Rome, just an hour away but truly another world! Medieval towns, glittering lakes and magnificent Renaissance monuments - this special tour will take you to a magical part of Italy where art, culture and nature come together in wonderful harmony. Leave the tourist trail far behind and discover it with Through Eternity today!

Wonderful Day- Loved Bracciano and the Castle

Andrea was a great guide. He could not have provided for a nicer day, doing something new rather than going into Rome for the day. We loved the drive along the Ocean to Bracciano. The visit to Odescalchi Castle was well worth it, both interesting and not at all crowded. Lunch in town was good and we had the opportunity to drive along the lakeshore beaches and take a walk on the lakeshore Boardwalk (and have a gelato) in the next town of Trevignano Romano before returning to Civitavecchia. We loved learning the history of the area and ideas for a future trip. Thanks Andrea!

The tour is a glorious immersion in countryside beyond Rome!

We had a fantastic post-cruise excursion to Lake Bracciano. We were thrilled that the tour could be customized to accommodate some physical limitations and an airport drop off. Our guide, Andrea, took us to the best locations to experience the treasures of the past and the beauty of the region today. The day was perfectly planned with the admission fee and lunch at a charming restaurant with regional specialties included. We could not have had a better experience!

Great alternative out of conventional circuit.

Andrea very nice and attentive that makes the visit a very good experience, especially for those who already know traditional Rome. It included a typical lunch and an extra visit to the beautiful city of Tarquinea, culturally very interesting.

Wonderful tour! The Odelschi Castle is beautiful and we enjoyed our delicious meal! Sandro was a great driver/guide.
