Full description
Start by meeting your local guide at your hotel, then drive south from Bucharest towards the Romanian and Bulgarian border. After crossing the Danube River and the Friendship Bridge, you will enter Bulgaria. On the way towards Veliko Tarnovo, stop for an exclusive visit of the Rock Hewn Churches next to the village of Ivanovo. These are Bulgarian Medieval churches, chapels and monastic cells hewn into the craggy gorge of Roussenski Lom River. Inscriptions, portraits of saints, and other restored items are from the 13th century. After this, discover Veliko Tarnovo, which was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and has a long tradition in the culture of Bulgaria. The city is rich in museums and historical sites, combined with a vivacious night life propelled by the students in one of the largest universities in Bulgaria. Take a walk on the Artisans Street where you have the chance to pass by workshops owned by Bulgarian families for generations, preserving the old traditions. You will have the chance to see a fully functional coppersmith workshop to see the production of copper plates and cups used for Turkish coffee. Hike up the Tsarevets Hill with the remains of the castle and church of Bulgarian kings. Visit the Fortress, the Patriarchal Church, the Royal Palace, and Emperor Balduin’s Tower. Next, journey to Arbanassi and step back in time while wandering the streets lined with houses and churches dating back as far as the 16th century. Take a peek into the life of rich merchants from the 17th century while visiting the Konstantsalieva House, showing the lavish but simple lifestyle of the nobility. Next, stop for lunch in one of the many restaurants serving local food and savor the famous Bulgarian cuisine. Take a brief walk in Ruse, Bulgaria’s first European style city. See the streets with curb stones and pavements, Viennese lanterns, and catering establishments. Bulgaria’s first lift was installed here in 1896. The list of monuments is vast here, counting sites like the Main Square, Palace of Justice, Catholic Boarding School, French College, the Pantheon, and the Neo-Gothic Church of Saint Paul. Following this, begin the journey back to Bucharest.

Thanks to our guide Gabriel. His explanations were always interesting. He was friendly and courteous. We enjoyed visiting the rock-hewn church in Ivanovo, the Chapel of the Nativity in Arbanassi and the hill of Tsarevets in Veliko Tarnovo. Gabriel introduced us to Bulgarian gastronomy for lunch at Arbanassi. On the other hand, some visits presented in the description of the excursion did not take place (street of artisans in Samovodene, Konstantsalieva house in Arbanassi, town of Veliko Tarnovo and town of Ruse). There was no bottled water on board either. We enjoyed the visits made but we are however disappointed with the differences with the description. This is the first time that an excursion taken from GetYourGuide is not entirely compliant.

Picked up right on time by the wonderful Gabriel. There were eight of us all together and we travelled through the south of Romania into Bulgaria. The border crossing was quick and efficient and soon we were on our way to see a church hewn from the rock. Unfortunately there was a local festival on and we had to park far away and walk to the church, which was ok in the morning but it was very hot. We saw the frescoes in the church and also heard some Bulgarian singing (I’m a huge Ivo Watts-Russell fan so this was an unexpected bonus). We then went to Arbanasi and had lunch (and heard more Bulgarian singing) before visiting the church of the Nativity, which was spectacular. Lastly we visited Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo. By this time it was too hot for me so I sat under a tree and watched the world go by. We were picked up again and taken back to Bucharest in time for dinner. Thank you Gabriel and my fellow passengers. It was a lovely day out. Just perfect.

Nico, our tour guide was right on time to pick us up, and for the whole ride, he was super knowledgeable and answered any of our random questions. There was only 4 of us in the group, so it was really intimate and we all felt like we had his attention. The locations he took us to we're absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend!
