Madeira: Guided Tour discovering the East Coast

2. Madeira: Guided Tour discovering the East Coast

The itinerary of the east coast of Madeira Island starts with a visit to Pico do Arieiro, one of the highest points on the island with breathtaking views of the mountains and the ocean. We then stop at Ribeiro Frio to do a small levada, the Levada dos Balcões, an easy 1.5 km walk that leads to a viewpoint overlooking the mountains. After the walk, we head to the Miradouro do Guindaste on Faial, where you can see the suspended glass platforms that allow visitors to walk over the cliffs. The tour continues with a visit to the famous Casinhas de Santana, where we can explore the traditional Madeiran houses with their thatched thatched roofs. It's an opportunity to take a picture on one of the island's postcards and go back in time imagining what it would be like to live in such a strategic little house from times gone by. For lunch, we stop at Restaurante Quinta do Furão, which offers delicious local cuisine, as well as spectacular views of the sea and mountains. After enjoying a delicious lunch, we will visit the ruins of Calhau de São Jorge. This place is known for its natural and historical beauty, the ruins are the remains of a fortification built in the 17th century to protect the island's coast from attacks by pirates and foreign invaders. However, the fortification was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair after the end of the 18th century, and nowadays only a few walls and partially standing towers remain. Despite this, the ruins are still a point of tourist and cultural interest on the island, attracting visitors looking to learn a little about Madeira's history and enjoy the beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Then we head to the Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto, which offers incredible views of Ponta de São Lourenço, a rocky peninsula that juts out into the ocean. Finally, we end the tour with a visit to Pico do Facho in Machico. This peak offers incredible views of the bay of Machico and is a historic site where the first Portuguese explorers arrived on the island of Madeira. It's a great way to end the tour and enjoy the natural beauty of the east coast of the island.
