From there, hit the open water and navigate the coast off of Rio Arade, the village of Ferragudo, medieval castles, and the Atlantic Ocean. Cruising east, pass Carvoeiro, which contains the famous rock formation of Algar Seco. Arriving to the lighthouse of Alfanzina, transfer to a small boat to visit the inside of the local caves which run from the lighthouse to Marinha Beach. It was after a stormy morning, so seas were rough. As there was no guarantee we could board smaller boats to enter caves, operator offered delay or refund. We went for the ride... and what a ride... fun if you have sea legs. The kids in board that day loved the rolls left to right and up and down. As we couldn't stop at caves, the captain took us up close and extended the excursion up the coast to see more beautiful landscapes. Very enjoyable afternoon ... maybe we were a little unsteady on our feet for a moment when we got back to dry land! But that's the fun of new experiences.

The pirate ship was incredible and the crew was great. We received a high level of customer service and our kids were very happy with the experience! However, do be warned that when the sea is rough, (during winter months the crew informed us) the crew will continue the tour even when they possibly should not have. We took our trip in January 2023 and the water was rocky. Several passengers became ill and still, we finished the voyage at sea. Also, no guarantees of visiting the Benegil caves as the water was again too rough for the smaller boat to get to the caves safely. We wish we could have been warned of the conditions and turned back sooner when the water got rough, but such is the life of a pirate!

It was a lot of fun! You first go out to sea in the big pirate ship towards the caves, about 1 hour. Then you change to smaller boats on the water. With these you then drive from all caves - very spectacular because you drive into caves that you don't think fit :-) Then you get back on the big ship and drive a bit, can then jump into the water and briefly in the Swim in the sea if you want and then drive back comfortably. There are two toilets on the ship and you can buy something to drink. In the high season it is probably really crowded and there are also small snacks. The guide only spoke English but he answered all questions without exception. We would drive it again. Just some pirate music might be played. That would be more appropriate than first 70's and then 80's music. But was ok.
