Montreux Private Tour: Waterfalls Valley&Aareschlucht Gorge

4. Montreux Private Tour: Waterfalls Valley&Aareschlucht Gorge

We will greet you at the lobby of your accommodation in Montreux. On a comfortable SUV or Minivan, we will make an unforgettable day trip to the heart of Switzerland - the valley of waterfalls. For all its splendor, Lauterbrunnen itself is quite small: its length is about eight kilometers, and its width does not exceed a thousand meters. But in this small area, there are as many as 72 waterfalls falling down from sheer cliffs. The most famous and most visited of them are Staubbach and Trummelbach. Both of these waterfalls plunge into the valley from a dizzying height of over 300 meters. It was previously thought that Staubbach was taller than Trummelbach, but more recently, after careful measurements, the opposite has been proven. However, everyone who visits Lauterbrunnen should definitely see both of these waterfalls, as well as other beauties of the fabulous valley. The Reichenbach Waterfalls in Meiringen is one of the most famous waterfalls in Switzerland. Opened in 1899, the funicular will take you 244 meters high into the mountains. Visitors from all around the world come to see the place where the famous detective Sherlock Holmes fought to his death with Professor Moriarty in 1891. The Aareschlucht is a section of the river Aare that carves through a limestone ridge near the town of Meiringen, in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. The gorge is an indirect product of glaciation; 10,000 years ago, just as the Ice Age was coming to an end, torrential runoff water from melting glaciers eroded a deep, narrow chasm through the limestone barrier. Although barely 1,4 kilometers long, this passage is bordered by sheer cliffs up to 50 m high on either side. The gorge varies in width from some 30 meters at its widest to just 1 meter at its narrowest.

The overall experience of Pilatus, with the rack railway, is impressive. The cogwheel train provides a very good view of the entire journey, it is a long and relaxed journey, and the journey is relatively comfortable. The circuits that can be traveled upon reaching the mountain are not wasted: each one more beautiful than the other. It is advisable to try to do all the circuits (4), or failing that, the shortest 3, which add up to a few hours in total, since one goes slowly due to the height. The only con is the poor prior information on the page: the cable car was under repair and there was no cable car ride. And they promote the cruise trip but in the Spanish translation it was not clear that there is NO cruise from October. So "Lucerne cable car, rack railway and cruise" is actually "Lucerne rack railway". As compensation, you receive a 20CHF voucher, which is clearly less than the cost of a cruise, but enough for a delicious and comforting snack.

We went on Nov 3, weather was ok , no rain thankfully, but a mix of clouds which hampered view but at least we had a view. Overall worth it to see all the mountains and valley and lakes below and to hike a bit. More strenuous hikes were available if one wants to do that. Lunch was nothing special. Cogwheel ride was comfortable, smooth and safe and fun.

Robert was our guide for this tour. He was friendly and took good care of us. Ensuring we know what to do and where to go. Spectacular views from the top. The coach was comfortable and clean. Highly recommend this tour to anyone who is looking to visit Mount Pilatus.

It was very foggy with slight drizzle so visibility was limited. But still a beautiful view of what is visible. Climbing to the top of the mountain was exhilarating, (very windy also)

Highly recommend Mt Pilatus. Cristina was amazing! So kind and knowledgeable.
