From the moorings at The Groves, Chester, you will head upstream under the Queen's Park Suspension Bridge and past the city's rowing clubs. You will then follow the sweeping bend of the Earl's Eye, passing some stunning riverside properties, and turn around at the city limits. On the return journey, the commentary details the history behind some of the more interesting riverside buildings, and the city's rich Roman, Medieval, and industrial heritage. The cruises will then finish with a great view of Chester Weir and the Old Dee Bridge, before disembarking back at The Groves.

We booked on line the morning we decided to go ( it was a beautiful day), parked in Broughton Park and Ride, getting off by The Barrs. The river is well signed from the Main Street, and you can walk down there - we walked through Grosvenor Park, but if you head for the clock tower you can climb up to the walls from there and have a really nice walk past some Roman remains down to the river. We headed for the boat ( Mark Twain in our case), showed the person in the cabin our booking on the phone, and climbed upstairs. I would recommend going upstairs if you can because you have a really good view of the gardens and buildings on the river bank.. A commentary runs with interesting facts about the buildings - a fascinating insight. After 15 minutes we turned round and headed back. It was just a very pleasant half hour on a lovely afternoon. And then an ice cream - try Sugbury’s , a local firm and absolutely delicious!!

Lovely relaxing cruise, although we couldn't hear the commentary very well due to a "loud mouth" sitting 2 rows away (obviously not interested in the history of Chester), and also an unsettled toddler making a noise throughout the trip. I think a drink would have placated her but grandmother must not have had one - poor child. The lady in charge of the boat was charming and fun.
