5. Chiang Mai: Ethical Elephant Observation Experience
Step into the world of giant mammals at ChangChill, a truly elephant-friendly venue supported by World Animal Protection. Experience an Observation-Only program, where you won't be encouraged to interact with the elephants. Observe 6 female elephants navigate the lush forest, roam the valley, graze, and bathe in the river, mud, and dust. Learn about the Karen hill tribe culture with local community members, or enjoy the breathtaking views from the elephant observation deck.
Half-Day Morning Program:
Start the tour with pick up from your hotel in Chiang Mai between 7.30-8 AM by minivan. Then set off on the 1.5-hour drive to ChangChill. Arrive and get introduced to ChangChill’s background and your schedule. Follow the guide into the forest to observe the elephants grazing, socializing, while observing from a safe distance. While in the elephant area, ask questions as your guides deliver a live lecture about elephant conservation, elephant behavior, and more interesting facts. Before lunch, help to fill feeding tubes with corn, sugar cane, grass, bananas, and any other supplementary food on hand. Enjoy lunch and see the huge friends enjoy their snack. Finish the tour at around 1.15 PM and get dropped off back at your hotel by around 3 PM
Half-Day Afternoon Program:
Get picked up from your hotel in Chiang Mai between 11-11:30 AM, arriving at the venue by 12 PM. First, enjoy a Thai vegetarian buffet for lunch. Admire the view of the elephants eating through the treats that were stashed in the fencing from the elephant observation deck. At 1 PM, sit back and see the elephants enjoy snacks filled from the morning session in the feeding tube. Learn about their diet and chat with a real Mahout. Finish the program around 4 PM be dropped off back at your hotel by around 6 PM.
If the half-day is not enough for you, extend your quality time with the giant new friends by combining the activities of the morning and afternoon programs. Start with hotel pickup in Chiang Mai between 7.30 - 8 AM. Then, spend the whole day to hear, see, and learn about these huge mammals in their natural habits as if you're the real Mahut. The full-day program will finish at around 3 PM and you will be dropped off back at your hotel by around 5 PM.
