Full description
Explore the famous Samaria Gorge on a trip along the northern coastline of Crete and through the White Mountains up to the Omalos Plateau. Samaria Gorge became a National Park in 1962 and today, it is the last natural refuge for the Cretan goat species known as Kri-Kri. Depart early in the morning and board a coach which will pick you up from your hotel. After a comfortable drive, arrive at the plateau of Omalos for a small break before heading to the entrance of the gorge. The start of the hiking trail through the gorge is at a height of 1200m. On the route, pass by rich vegetation and through the tall rock walls known as the "Iron Gates". Fill up your water bottle at one of the springs in the gorge. At the end of the 17km walk, reach the Libyan Sea. There, at the beach of Ayia Roumeli, enjoy a refreshing swim or sit at one of the taverns until a ferry takes the group to Chora Sfakion where the bus will be waiting for you to return you back to your hotel.

Mackie was a really great guide and made everything run smoothly. She gave us all the important information about the gorge, was very entertaining and we immediately knew that we were in good hands. It started an hour after us and would have been there for us in case of problems. The gorge itself was beautiful and I was very happy with my hiking boots and walking sticks! Although not exactly untrained, my wife and I had sore muscles in our calves for 2 days afterwards.

Pickup worked perfectly. The trip to the gorge was entertaining and interesting thanks to the tour guide. There was enough time for the hike itself and everyone can hike at their own pace. The return trip by boat is a very nice way to end the day. This excursion is highly recommended for anyone who can walk well.

Absolutely breathtaking scenery! It’s a must once in a lifetime! However really be prepared it is not for everybody. Trekking Shoes should be a must as you walk mostly on stones the whole path and they are slippery its extremely easy to get injured. Take your time and be careful. A normal time to get through it is around 6-7 hours with pauses to eat fill your water bottle take pictures. You should start early as possible to have plenty of time to enjoy it! All in all an epic experience! The guides are great and they all know each other and are there to help everyone. Everyone must go in their own pace. Don’t forget to bring money as the entrance is extra 5 EUR and the boat is extra 11 EUR to take you to Sfakia. We did it with Meki and she was great! She told us so many things also about Crete in general! She was also very funny and always smiling as her smiley on her backpack! Thanks a lot Meki from Ballos Travel Agency and Marcos our driver, the best driver!
