Krakow: The Lady with an Ermine at the Czartoryski Museum

1. Krakow: The Lady with an Ermine at the Czartoryski Museum

The "Lady with an Ermine" portrait embodies the Renaissance idea of an image as an illusion of natural vitality. Da Vinci managed to achieve this thanks to his detailed knowledge of anatomy, and his skill with light features. Combining these he was able to create a three-dimensional figure on the image plane. The original background, which was painted over in black in the 19th century, was also modelled with light just like the figure, which must have added to the impression of the model emerging from the shadows. The painting was purchased in Italy in around 1800 by Adam Jerzy, the son of Princess Izabela Czartoryska, and later donated to the Museum in Puławy. The portrait became the property of the Republic of Poland in 2016.

Small but really nice museum whose strong points are obviously The Lady with an Ermine and the paintings by Rembrandt. I booked with Get Your guide and then wrote to the museum to indicate the preferred time for the visit. From the museum they immediately responded by creating a reservation. The Gyg voucher must be printed and brought on paper because it is kept at the desk. In any case, an excellent experience, an unmissable stop on a visit to Krakow.

The museum is definitely worth a look, the Da Vinci that hangs is beautiful and you can easily spend an hour just looking at it. However, the Rembrandt painting was a personal highlight for me, incredibly well staged so that it captivates you for a long time.

Wonderful museum, elegant and well laid out, with wonderful exhibits. Synthetic and essential audio guide. Excellent tea in the bar at the end of the exhibition.

Nice museum showing cracovian an polish history. Da Vinci’s painting is worth the entrance fer alone. Very good audioguide.

The prettiest place I've been in Krakow. I recommend it to everyone. Unfortunately, Wawel is overrated. regards
