2. From Athens: Private Day Trip to Delphi with Monastery Visit

This is a great opportunity to visit one of the most renowned sites in Greece in one day. The Delphi day tour starts with a drive on the national highway towards northern Greece passing by the plane of Thieves and the city of Levadia. Then we will be on the slopes of Mount Parnassus before reaching Delphi. Our first stop is going to be the monastery of Hosios Loukas which represents the second golden age of Byzantine art (11th -12th century), in particular its golden mosaic decoration and fine architecture. After spending some time in this area of serenity we will drive to the site of Delphi, an ancient Greek sanctuary with a PanHellenic character dedicated to the God Apollo. It functioned as an Oracle and was considered ‘the naval’, the center of the world and is today a symbol of Greek cultural unity. The scenic location allows you to have a view of the Greek mountains and two more sites the Gymnasium and the secondary sanctuary of Athena Pronea. In the site, you will visit the Temple of Apollo where Pythia spoke with oracles, the theater and the stadium. While in the museum you will be able to see the famous charioteer and Gold and Ivory statues. After the site we will have our lunch at the modern village of Delphi with a view of the mountains of Fokis and our last destination will be the village of Arachova. A mountainous village built on a cliff 900 m above sea level very close to the Parnassus ski resort. It’s the mainland’s answer to Mykonos. After some free time for shopping and wandering around we will have a pleasant drive back to Athens.

It was a complete treat to travel with Takis, our friendly driver, out from Athens to Thermopylae and on to Delphi, coming home via Arachova. This was a most relaxed way to experience these rich archeological sites with no rush and lots of much appreciated local advice and information along the way – including a delicious lunch recommendation with a spectacular view in Delphi itself. It was great to experience the juxtaposition of the sparse site of the Battle of Thermopylae with the vast number of ruins on the site at Delphi, and the drive out from Athens, between all the sites, and back into Athens was beautiful to experience as a passenger. The car was comfortable and the cold water was much appreciated. The drive through the UNESCO listed olive groves that surround Delphi as an unexpected highlight as well. Very grateful we were able to do this: it was a day to remember.

This trip is not to be missed! We enjoyed the ride to Delphi which passed by a very beautiful town. At Delphi, we witnessed a magnificent view of the entire place and a gorgeous mountain view. We enjoyed this visit way more than Acropolis. Many thanks to our driver guide, George who picked us up on time, provided us sufficient time for toilet breaks and recommended a nice family restaurant where we enjoyed the most delicious Greek meal.

A very interesting excursion with a friendly driver who also offered photo opportunities. Suggestion for improvement: More information about Thermopylae and Delphi could be provided before or at the beginning of the tour.

Wonderful, unforgettable day! And Dimitri the driver was great all day with us!
