Sardinia: Oddoene Valley E-Bike Tour + Local Product Tasting

1. Sardinia: Oddoene Valley E-Bike Tour + Local Product Tasting

Meet your guide and head to the Oddoene Valley. Drive past olive groves and take in the imposing silhouette of the Supramonte mountains. Once you reach the Rio Flumineddu at the bottom of the valley, head out on your e-bike tour. Ride past beautiful natural pools and waterfalls. Make your way through a dirt path along the typical vineyards of Cannonau. Discover the traces left over the millennia by the people who inhabited the Oddoene Valley. See a Domus di Janas tomb dating back to 4000 B.C., the ruins of the Giants' Tomb dating back to 1500 B.C., a Nuraghe built on a granite hillock, and the Madonna del Buon Cammino Church dating back to 1600. Enjoy an aperitif with local products before ending your e-bike tour.

Dorgali: Trek to Gorropu with Panoramic Views

2. Dorgali: Trek to Gorropu with Panoramic Views

Meet your guide in Orosei or Dorgali before starting the adventure with some off-road driving to descend into the valley where the trek path begins. The hike starts with some water wading through the Flumineddu river to enter the woodland area formed of Old Oaks, Arbutus and Mediterranean shrubs. Walk along the cliffs of Monte Oddeu and arrive at the entrance to the Gorroppu gorge in less than 2 hours. Admire the incredible rocky walls which rise for more than 400 meters over the dry river bed, making this gorge one of the deepest canyons in Europe. Today the canyon is a natural border between the Italian territories of Urzulei and Orgosolo. The canyon was formed when the Flumineddu river excavated the Jurassic limestone that formed when Sardinia was covered by the sea. Learn from your guide how the marine rocks are full of fossils from ammonites, fish and algae found in the area, and hopefully catch a glimpse of such an artifact. During the trek, discover the unique micro climate of the canyon that allowed the giant growth of the trees including the Phyllirea and the Old Yew. As you continue on the hike, the path becomes harder and harder, you may have to use your hands to proceed through the boulders. When it is no longer possible to go further, it’s time to head back.

Cagliari: Full-Day Tour of Cala Luna & Sea Oxen Grottoes

5. Cagliari: Full-Day Tour of Cala Luna & Sea Oxen Grottoes

Here, once reigned “sea oxen” as the locals used to call monk seals due to their tapered shape and tame behavior like that of an ox. These magnificent mammals, now (maybe) extinct, gave their name to a marvel of nature: the Sea Oxen Grottoes (Grotte del Bue Marino), since the 50s one of the main attractions of the Gulf of Orosei, in particular Cala Gonone in Dorgali territory. Today, it is a favorite destination among nature lovers, and the ideal union between sea and mountain, as they are part of the karst system of Codula di Luna, Italy’s largest 70 kilometer of tunnels in the bowels of Gennargentu. Its majestic entrance, formed by two arches over the sea, is located 2 kilometers away from splendid Cala Luna. The marine caves are 15 kilometers long in total and divided into two main branches. The northern branch, fossilized due to the interrupted karstic activity, is not accessible to the public. However, you will also be able to visit the southern branch thanks to illuminated causeways for about 900 meters. Speleologists are allowed to explore an additional 4 kilometers (of the overall 5 of this branch). Seawater penetrates the wide hall, and countless little ponds of sweet water from subterraneous rivers abound, separated from sandy beaches filled with concrete formations. The tourist itinerary among stalactites and stalagmites will offer an extraordinary color spectacle, thanks to the light beams penetrating it. You cannot help but gasp in awe at the long shadows projected onto the waters of a subterranean saltwater lake with more than one square kilometer of surface.  The cave is also famous for esoteric rock paintings, dated back to the Neolithic, illustrating a circle of people around what is supposedly a representation of the sun. The walk finishes in the seal beach – these sea mammals once came here to mate and have their cubs. The visit will be led by expert guides and last about 1-hour. Leaving the Cala Gonone Harbor for an amazing boat tour until the caves. After the visit, it will be possible to stop at the Cala Luna for swimming in this little slice of paradise.

What people are saying about Dorgali

Fantastic experience that allowed us to get to know Sardinia even more outside the beach. The guide proved to be very competent. After picking us up in the village, we left in his jeep, we started the trek to the slopes of the mountain, reached and visited the archaeological site of Tiscali and then we started the descent. Come prepared: hiking shoes and adventurous attitude!

The experience was truly excellent, with the guides being thoughtful to reorganise this trip when some unpredictable circumstances occurred. Both the way up and down were truly beautiful and not that hard to do. the visit to the archaeological site was insightful and I did appreciate our guide pointing out mountains, canyons and plants that we would find along the way.
