  • Hear what happened to the town when Vesuvius erupted
  • Learn how the city was so well preserved by volcanic ash and mud
Full description
Explore the ruins of Herculaneum on a 2-hour private tour with an archeologist guide. Known as the sister to Pompeii, the town was buried following a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. Get a glimpse into the private lives of Romans and see amazingly well-preserved wooden objects, paintings, and mosaics. While Pompeii was covered in 4-5 meters of ash, an avalanche of mud about 20 meters deep buried Herculaneum, created a better-preserved site. See many of the highlights, including the Forum, the House of the Black Saloon, the House of the Wooden Partition, the Bakery, the Terrace of Marcus Nonius Balbus, and the beach where hundreds of skeletons of the victims were discovered.

we arrived at Herculaneum and were met by alessandro. he whisked us past the queues and then held us spellbound for the next 2 and half hours. to say that he was extremely knowledgeable would be an understatement, he brought the past alive and helped us to understand what life would have been like in roman times. Herculaneum is a fascinating place and we would highly recommend a private guided tour!

Our tour was outstanding! Francisco was personable and knowledgeable, and we learned a great deal from our tour. He was able to navigate well around the groups of school children we met along the way. He discussed the eruption of Vesuvius with my scientifically-minded husband and the art and architecture with me equally well. So glad we booked this tour--would highly recommend to others.

It was excellent. I am very partially deaf and having a personal guide who was most informative and easy to hear and understand. We learn so much. I would definitely book a guide again. The site was so interesting and our guide was very passionate about the site.
