What people are saying about Estreito da Calheta

The whale and dolphin tour with the boat Stenella via the provider Lobosonda is highly recommended! We were there at the beginning of August and were fascinated! This was the highlight of our Madeira trip! The introduction before the start was very understandable and informative. During the tour there were repeated explanations in English and German. The provider ensures that the marine animals are treated responsibly and approaches the whales and dolphins very carefully. On our tour we saw Atlantic spotted dolphins, beaked whales and, as a highlight, fin whales. Fin whales are the second largest animals on earth. Of course, it can happen that you don't see as much on the tour as we do - it's about nature and the animals' own lives. But thanks to an excellent skipper, a great tour guide and scouts on the mountains, we saw a lot. Processing via getyourguide was easy.

After an initial briefing by our guide Paula, we took the Stenella out to sea off Calheta and soon saw beaked whales. After a few minutes of rest and some explanations by Paula, we came across a group of pilot whales that were also great to watch. At the end there were a lot of otherwise shy striped dolphins to see. It was a very successful trip on a Sunday afternoon in October. We can highly recommend it. But you should keep in mind that you are not in a zoo and there is no guarantee that you will see this or that animal. The guides and the driver have support from a spotter on land so that they always try to show something. The additional explanations are wonderful for acquiring some knowledge and seeing the water world with different eyes.

Nice trip. A more expensive one, but it's all worth it. They treat the animals very respectfully and our guide could tell very nicely about the animals. Recommended!

Very competent team who care about the well-being of the animals. By far the best whale and dolphin spotting we have done so far.

The speed boat has a great advantage when moving longer distances (it travels at about 50 km/h) and is surprisingly comfortable.
