Experience the magic of the Great Barrier Reef during both day and night and enjoy a 'reef sleepover' out at sea! Day 1: Travel on a high-speed, comfortable vessel 39 nautical miles from shore to the reef. The approximately 3-hour trip to the destination counts as its own sightseeing adventure. Spot whales at certain times of the year! Arrive at the permanently moored pontoon on Hardy Reef – one of the most spectacular stretches of the Great Barrier Reef. A coral wall, home to an ecosystem of magnificent corals and marine life runs adjacent to the pontoon. Hundreds of fish species at Hardy Reef will surprise and delight you - especially the giant groper.   Explore the reef all day with your choice of swimming, snorkelling and more. Curb your hunger with morning and afternoon tea and a sumptuous buffet lunch. As dusk approaches, watch for turtles who nibble at the seaweed around the pontoon. Watch the sun set while you sip your sundowner...the reef comes to life in the darkness of the night. Enjoy a delicious gourmet dinner and full use of the bar. Cairns: 2-Day Great Barrier Reef Dive and Snorkel Boat Trip

4. Cairns: 2-Day Great Barrier Reef Dive and Snorkel Boat Trip

Day 1: Board the boat for morning tea and to meet the crew before setting sail to the reefs near Cairns. Along the way, the crew will conduct diving and naturist briefings. You will also have plenty of time to get to know the other participants.  Next, arrive at the first Outer Reef location, such as Flynn Reef. Depths will range from 5 to 28 meters. Expect to encounter turtles, small reef sharks, and schools of open water fish. The in-water activities are followed by lunch and afternoon tea. On the Outer Reef, one of the crew will offer a guided snorkel tour for those interested in learning more about the reef. In the afternoon, the boat moves to its second location. This could be Milne Reef, home to the Three Sisters and The Whale. The Sisters is one of Cairns' most famous dive sites and offers unsurpassed night and early morning dives. Depths range from 6 to 36 meters. An afternoon dive or snorkel opportunity is followed by preparations for nightfall. Passengers undertaking a night dive are briefed and the diving begins. Dinner is served once activities are completed. After dinner, relax and buy an ice-cold beverage from the onboard bar to enjoy with your crew mates. DAY 2: Awake to the dawn and watch the sunrise over the Coral Sea. This is the perfect time to snorkel or scuba dive as early morning is a fantastic time to see reef sharks, turtles and cruising fish. Breakfast is served. The boat will then depart for its next location. Generally, this location will offer the more experienced diver the chance to have a great drift dive. Morning tea is served. After mid-morning, depending on the weather, the boat will move to another dive site/reef. If you are tired, this is an excellent time to relax, read a book and take in the stunning views. Lunch is served before departure. On the way back to the shore, the sails are hoisted. It is very common to have dolphins swim alongside the boat. During the winter months, you may even be able to see humpback whales. The emphasis on the journey home is to relax and enjoy the company of new-found friends. Coral Sea Dreaming is a strongly-built 16-metre steel yacht. The boat is equipped with 2 toilets and a separate hot water shower. A well-equipped galley ensures high quality food, and a large rear cockpit ensures spacious entertaining space. For accommodation, there are 6 shared bunks for the social and solo travellers, and for the couples 3 private cabins are available.

What people are saying about Far North Queensland

An experience never to be forgotten.

We found it very special to sleep on the reef for one night. Especially after having been there with so many people during the day, staying in a small group is wonderful. Then we were lucky that the whales were regularly seen. Awesome!

AMAZING experience overall!! I’m not sure if they are understaffed but staff could be a little more accommodating sometimes felt like an inconvenience when asking for a drink if they were busy doing other things

The reefsleep is a unique experience: nice reef for snorkeling, super nice hosts and very delicious food
