Daydream Island: 2-Day Great Barrier Reef Experience

4. Daydream Island: 2-Day Great Barrier Reef Experience

Day 1: Travel on a high-speed, comfortable vessel 39 nautical miles from shore to the reef. The approximately 3-hour trip to the destination counts as its own sightseeing adventure, and you can even spot whales at certain times of the year. Following your journey, arrive to the permanently moored pontoon on Hardy Reef – one of the most spectacular stretches of the Great Barrier Reef. This area sits above a coral wall, home to an ecosystem of magnificent coral and marine life which runs adjacent to the pontoon. The hundreds of fish species at Hardy Reef are bound to surprise and delight you - particularly the giant groper.   Explore the reef all day by swimming, snorkeling, and more. Curb your hunger with morning and afternoon tea and a sumptuous buffet lunch, and as dusk approaches, watch for turtles who nibble at the seaweed around the pontoon. Watch the sun set while you sip your sun-downer, and watch as the reef comes to life in the darkness of the night. That evening, enjoy a delicious gourmet dinner and full use of the bar. Gaze at a gazillion starts from your comfortable bed set-up on the top deck of the pontoon. On a clear night you can sleep with the cover open, allowing for just you, the sea air, and the stars. Finally, relax as the tranquility of being in the middle of the ocean lulls you to sleep. Day 2: Begin your day with a breakfast of bacon and eggs, toast, and cereal, accompanied by coffee and tea. Following breakfast, spend more time exploring the reef, snorkeling before the day boat arrives. Giant Maori Wrasse, spectacular coral formations, tropical fish, turtles, and reef sharks might make an appearance, and you can choose to visit the underwater viewing chamber to look at the coral from the comfort of our semi-submersible vessel. Following that, head back to shore where you return to the Port of Airlie by approximately 6:10PM.

What people are saying about Far North Queensland

It was fantastic not having to share the aquarium with lots of people, because it was an after hours tour I highly recommend this. All the ladies at the Aquarium were super friendly and helpful from the moment we walked in. Our guide Bec was the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate about the environment and you could tell how much she loved these sea creatures from her in depth explanations. We loved it so much we went back and explored the aquarium the next day to take more photos of the beautiful animals. The aquarium was impeccably clean.

Recommend the sunset cruise as one of your first activities in Airlie. We went on our first night there and it was the perfect introduction to Airlie before we started venturing further out to the islands. The crew are lovely and it was very relaxing having a chat and taking in the views while enjoying the bubbly and nibbles.

AMAZING experience overall!! I’m not sure if they are understaffed but staff could be a little more accommodating sometimes felt like an inconvenience when asking for a drink if they were busy doing other things

The tour guides were hilarious and made the trip really entertaining! Bubbles, music and a gorgeous sunset, couldn't ask for anything more:)

This tour and dinner was amazing!!! Very informative, small group, amazing staff! We loved it! 10/10
