Naples: Rione Sanità and Fontanelle Cemetery Walking Tour

2. Naples: Rione Sanità and Fontanelle Cemetery Walking Tour

Your tour will begin from the Fontanelle Cemetery, which was built in an ancient quarry and is a great place to learn more about the relationship between Neapolitan people and death. In this place, the sacred and the profane co-exsist, creating the cult of the ”pezzentelle” (the souls of purgatory). It contains over 40,000 remains of people, mostly skulls, victims of the plague, and victims of the and cholera epidemics of the mid-17th century. At the end of 19th century it became a cult place, with some believers deciding to rearrange the thousands of anonymous bones, adopting a skull of an abandoned soul in return for protection. Your guided visit will then continue to the Rione Sanità ,where you will have the opportunity to admire two masterpieces of the Neapolitan Baroque: Palazzo San Felice and Palazzo dello Spagnolo. Before ending your tour at Porta San Gennaro, you will taste the famous and sweet “fiocco di neve” in one of the most important pastry shops in Naples.

We had a lovely tour with Rita in Naples, and it was a big highlight of our holiday! It was so great to meet a local and step out of the chaos that is the city centre and visit the local places. Rita was so knowledgable on the history of her city and it was great to get some insight into it too. It was nice to have a private tour as well as you feel so much more involved. We stopped off at a local bakery and had THE BEST DESSERT we've ever eaten, that we continued to go back every day of the trip! Also even after our tour Rita was super helpful for the rest of our trip, even booking us in at her favourite local restaurant which was our best meal of the trip by far!!

A very interesting walk through the streets of Naples outside the "classic" streets, together with our guide Rita who showed us, among other things, street art in different forms by artists I did not know. With a "Snowflake" in a pastry shop of the Health, very good! A special thanks to our guide Rita: Naples seen with her a whole other thing!

Ylenia is the best guide I ever had during my Italy trip. I was late for half an hour due to traffic issues. She waited for me with patience and kept a high energy during our tour. She really wanted to share her knowledge and love of Naples with me. I learned a lot from her.

Milly the tour guide was absolutely fantastic. Very personable, knowledgeable and a fantastic storyteller. I learnt heaps and I saw lots of new things that I hadn’t seen in my other visits to Naples. I highly recommend this tour especially if it’s with Milly.

Enrico explained street art in terms of Naples' culture and themes. He answered all questions about the city's history in detail. Good tip!
