Full description
Depart Funchal and journey to the start of your walk, where you will follow the routes of the "levada" irrigation system developed in the 16th century by Madeira's first settlers. Descend from the plateau of Paul da Serra to the Rabaçal guesthouse and walk to the waterfall of the Levada do Risco. Continue towards the Levada das 25 Fontes, dominated by moorland at its highest point. Walk until you reach a small lagoon at the bottom of an enormous cliff, and marvel at the sight of 25 natural springs cascading into the lake. Return along a different path, passing through a tunnel that carries water to the south of the island. Admire a wide variety of endemic flora and fauna along the way.

I definitely recommend this activity if you enjoy walks. It has breathtaking views along the way and our guide Charlotte was really nice. I would say that level of difficulty is easy to moderate, it has some stairs up and down and some very narrow places but the waterfalls are stunning. I just wish that there was not so many people doing the walk at the same time so we could take more time to appreciate it.

Our guide Sarah was just great: She loves her island, tells a lot of interesting facts and figures during the hike and is always very sensitive to the needs of her guests. The hike is easy to do and varied. Unfortunately, the springs are hopelessly overcrowded... The last part of the hike in particular is very beautiful and also a bit adventurous with the crossing of an 850m long tunnel.

This excursion carried out on a different date than high season may be pleasant, but in the middle of August it was very crowded, it was uncomfortable to walk through the permanent crossing of people through very narrow spaces and the 25 fountains, which must be the final touch of the road, they were so full of people that you hardly felt like stopping to see them. We enjoyed the path itself more than the fountains, but if you are only going to do a levada, surely there are better ones because in the end the path is not very different (in all of them there are levadas and laurel forest, waterfalls...) but there will be fewer people . Regardless of this we are satisfied with the organization of the trip. Although at first we were scared to see such a large bus (we were 48 people), when we arrived they divided us into groups of 15 by language. Our guide was wonderful and the road is quite accessible.
