The unknown cattle farm to many has been in this family for over a hundred years, they provide most of its milk for the making of our famous “requeijão” cheese, and see the old milking techniques. Stop for lunch in Porto da Cruz, sugarcane region, lunch, short walk after lunch and visit the only rum factory in Europe that operates with steam. Very interesting excursion with guide Toni. The tour starts with a visit to a banana plantation, continues with a Madeira winery and a banana cooperative. After a detour to the lighthouse, there will be a delicious lunch in a local restaurant. We would not visit the nearby mini zoo again, the animal husbandry there is questionable. After the break we go to a rum factory, to a fruit cooperative and at the end to a cattle ranch. Unfortunately we had to stop there because it was pouring out of buckets. We found the tour really interesting because it was something completely different. Of course you could buy something almost everywhere, which we did. Incidentally, lunch, drinks and everything on the way are included in the price and the price-performance ratio was definitely right for us.

Lucy is a passionate and talkative guide. She showed and explained everything to us with great energy. You can notice the care and effort that she has put into the creation of this program and the passion she has for showing others the agricultural side of Madeira. We greatly enjoyed seeing this side of Madeira and learned a lot about life on the island - especially that which is not attached to the tourism industry. How bananas and other tropical fruits and vegetables are grown was super interesting for us. We had never seen a banana field nor how fruits are sorted and packed in real life before and now know what it takes for a banana to end up in our supermarket (: The tour is not the cheapest but it's well worth its price: you will see places that you could not see otherwise - and the lunch is also great ;-) We recommend it to anyone who's interested in how food is grown.
