The fortress is composed of 80 buildings which were built between 1940-1942, with 50 of them being bunkers. The headquarters had its own electric power generator, railway station, and an air-strip, and quarters for top Nazi officials as well as a casino and cinema were located in the central part of the compound. The whole area was camouflaged, protected by barbed wire and mine fields. Transportation is conducted by deluxe, spacious, and air-conditioned vehicles which are driven by experienced chauffeurs. The Elblag Canal, also called the Elblag-Ostroda Canal, is a 150-years-old canal in Poland that runs from Elblag to Ostroda. At over 80 km in length, it is the longest navigable canal still in use in Poland. It is also one of the most interesting canals in Europe. Elblag Canal’s uniqueness arises from its peculiar choice of engineering to tackle a particularly difficult section of the route where the water level rises by 100 meters. This particular section is located between Druzno Lake and Piniewo Lake, a distance of about 10 km. Because the difference in height was too large, it was impractical to build traditional locks. Instead, an ingenious system of inclined planes was employed where the boats are lifted out of the water and placed into tracks and dragged across dry lands. This tour is designed to give you an insider's view of the area's tumultuous past, while at the same time, showing you its current beauty. Westerplatte was for centuries a military base for many different armies, most people associate it with a date: the 1st of September 1939. Even though other Polish cities were attacked a few minutes earlier than Westerplatte, this place is the symbol for the beginning of the Second World War. Here 200 Polish soldiers heroically fought the Nazis which outnumbered them by 8 times. Nowadays in Westerplatte you can see the remaining Guardhouse No.1 and the remains of a barracks. The whole area is quite small so you will walk though it. You will see a small military cemetery and a huge Monument to the defenders of the Polish Coast. A large monument pays tribute to those Polish defenders and marks the spot where the entire world was plunged into war just 60 years ago. The Westerplatte tour is offered in 2 options: Standard option: First you will be picked up from your hotel in Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot. Of course your private guide will be with you during whole trip so you will get information about the history of Gdansk and Westerplatte already in the car. Alternative option (cruise): You are going to meet your private guide near the Golden Gate in Gdansk. So you will have the opportunity to take a walk through the Royal Way and hear how this route was only accessible to the powerful monarchs in earlier days. Then you will take a 45-minute long cruise to the Westerplatte by the “Black Pearl” or “Galleon Lion” and after a 2-hour sightseeing ride you will return in the same way. News has emerged of a cache of active bombs which were dumped into the Baltic Sea somewhere off the port of Gdynia after WW2. A major criminal organisation is already searching for them and, if successful, could hold the city to ransom or even detonate them. The local authorities are desperate to locate them first, so they have called in the experts- you! Can you gather enough info to locate & defuse the bombs before its too late? During your mission, you will be asked to complete a series of different spy tasks at 8 points of interest, as well as keeping an eye out for some bonus features. If you play as one team, you'll have a points target to achieve in order for the mission to be a success. If you have enough people (8+) to divide into 2 or more teams, the one with the most points wins- easy! :D In this activity, we combine sightseeing & historical info on an attractive 3.5km route around town, with lots of good old-fashioned fun and a real spy atmosphere ;) It is ideal for groups of all shapes and sizes, and it is also totally family-friendly.
