2. From Budapest: Gödöllő Royal Palace Tour

Just 30 minutes outside of Budapest, set in the lush Hungarian countryside, is the beautiful Royal Palace of Gödöllő, one of the extravagant residences of the former Austrian Emperors. The former residence of the Hapsburg emperors is the second largest Baroque Palace in the world and is one of the largest and most important examples of Hungarian architecture. Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, who was fondly called 'Sissi', and Francis Joseph I lived here in the late 19th century. The royal couple stayed in Gödöllő mainly in autumn and spring, and revived and invested in the agricultural town in which the palace is set. The elegant royal complex is now open to visitors, and this tour will take you inside the restored palace for a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the emperors. You'll visit the palace museum and will be guided through the 26–hectare English garden of the palace. As you explore the immense and brilliantly decorated estate, your guide will let you in on the secrets of the private life, lovers, and hidden doors and rooms of the royal couple. You'll have the opportunity for a coffee break on the grounds before heading back to central Budapest.

Had a great time! Paid a little extra for hotel pickup which was totally worth it. Was well organized and the guide did a good job keeping us informed. The palace is beautiful of course and we didn’t feel rushed at all. Our guide split her time between English and German and I think it would have been better to have one dedicated person per language since there were long waits in between when she switched and we didn’t all get all the same facts and she was more comfortable speaking German. The guide did a great job though as switching back and forth would be difficult. Definitely book this tour as it was nice to get out of the city and see a little more of Hungary and to learn why Queen Sisi was so important to the Hungarians.

A taxi picked us up directly from the hotel and took us to the meeting place outside the Intercontinental hotel, where the excursion departs from. The guide Cristina speaks Italian well and was very good she knows the history of Budapest and Sissi well, it was not a mere exposition of facts, which were told to us in a participatory way, even with anecdotes that the official history often ignores. In 30 minutes you arrive in Gödöllo, after a tour of the park the visit of the Castle began at 10 and lasts about 2 hours. The castle for Sissi lovers is a must! A must see.

Very nice tour, a must for Sissi fans. Very small group of 4 people, great tour guide, everything works great. Great
