2. From Mérida: Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, Henequen & Cenote Tour

Discover the charming and historical Hacienda Sotuta de Peón on a tour from Mérida by van. Visit the hacienda's grounds, henequen agave fields on a mule drawn cart and learn about its production before seeing and swimming in a cenote with turquoise waters. Leave Mérida behind and immerse yourself in Mexican culture with a visit to the Hacienda Sotuta de Peón. Surrounded by lush gardens, steeped in culture and history, a visit to this hacienda will transport you to back the 19th century. Meet locals at the hacienda and learn why henequen — a form of agave — was called the "green gold" in olden times. Thanks to this green plant, the region of Yucatan became a very rich state. Next, explore the surroundings of the henequen fields with a visit to the hacienda's main house and machine room. Learn about the process of henequen scraping, manual corking, and the laying of fibre. Finally, take a ride in a cart pulled by mules, passing through La Casa Maya and the henequen fields. The cherry on top of this tour is a visit to one of Mexico's natural underground oases — a cenote. Swim in its crystal clear waters to cool off or merely soak up the natural cave formation from the platform. Tuck into local regional snacks at the main restaurant and enjoy some free time to discover parts of the hacienda at your own pace before heading back to Mérida.

This is a wonderful tour! Uxmal is the most beautiful ruin site and it was great to be basically the first tour group there while it was cool in the morning. The buffet lunch was excellent and again, we were the first group there. The location of the restaurant was beautiful! Then on to the hacienda which was very interesting. Our guide was very dramatic and his enthusiasm really added to the fun. I loved seeing how the henequene was processed into the fibres and made into ropes. Then we had a unique ride on a mule driven train car to the cenote for a very refreshing hour to cool off. All in all, the best overall tour I’ve had in Mexico and very good value for the money.

The guide and the driver were considerate and helpful. The guide Guillermo was very informative and was very attentive to see that I didn't fall on any of the uneven rocks on the site. The hacienda and the cenote at the end was interesting, but the jewel in the crown was uxmal and I enjoyed the story of the mayans at the planeto and the lunch.

Great day. Good driving in nice van with AC. Arrived at Uxmal earlier before the crowds (not that there are many). Carlos was a good guide. Lunch excellent. Hacienda informative and fabulous cenote. Good value.
