Update August 9th: The flow of new lava at Litli-Hrutur has stopped, at least for the time being. The area is still smoldering and is fascinating to visit. After a period on calm following eruption in 2012 and 2022, the Reykjanes Peninsula has awoken once more. In mid-July, a new volcano at Litli Hrutur erupted spewing lava and smoke over a vast area. Discover the beauty of volcanic landscapes in the Geldingadalur Valley on this day trip from Reykjavík. Walk past the eruption site Meradalir and Fagraadalsfjall Volcano areas to see the new lava fields. Capture photos at locations like Lake Kleifarvatn, The Bridge between Continents, and Gunnuhver Hot Springs. Start with a pickup in Reykjavík before heading on a scenic drive surrounded by breathtaking views. Stop by Lake Kleifarvatn to take in the black sand beach and surrounding mountains. Lace up your hiking boots and begin the long walk towards Litli Hrutur, north of Meradalir. Please note that the hike is of moderate to hard difficulty and takes around 2 hours each way. But please note that the route we take can vary depending on conditions on the day. We will always take you to the safest viewing point. This is a good moment to eat your packed lunch. Drive the Reykjanes Peninsula, where volcanoes have shaped the area, with immense ancient lava fields now covered by soft green lava moss. Continue to the Gunnuhver Hot Springs to breathe in steam from the boiling waters. Make your way to the oldest lighthouse in Iceland Reykjanes Lighthouse. Admire the cliffs and sea stacks formed by the Atlantic Ocean at the Valhnúkamöl Boulder Ridge. Finally, see the Bridge Between Continents which crosses a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Get a picture of you walking across the bridge before returning to Reykjavík.

Explore hot springs and the black basalt beach of Lake Kleifarvatn. In July 2023, a new volcanic fissure opened in the hills of Reykjanes. Hike past to the 2021 eruption site at Fagradalsfjall Volcano in Geldingadalur valley. The hike takes about 2 hours each way on generally flat terrain. You won´t regret the effort though as you are rewarded with a stunning display of natural force. Witness newly formed lava descending from the volcano into old lava moss and rocks. After the unforgettable experience, hike back down the valley once more. Your bones might be weary so ending your day by relaxing in the Blue Lagoon is the perfect medicine. Let the warm healing geothermal waters soften your muscles and soul after your volcanic experience.

When the conditions are right you will be able to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Northern Lights at Aurora Basecamp, located just 30 minutes drive from Reykjavik. Please note transfer is not included. When and if the time comes, and the Northern Lights light up the night sky, head out to witness the Aurora Borealis in all its glory. Upon arrival, meet your guide at the entrance of the dome and enjoy a welcome hot chocolate to warm up. Then, wander through a small exhibition together with your guide and learn all there is to know about the Northern Lights and how to spot them. As you wait for the magic to happen, wander in and out of the heated lounge, or have a seat outside by the fire pits. After being picked up in downtown Reykjavík, travel by minibus to the peninsula. Before long, the beautiful Kleifarvatn and Graenavatn lakes will appear in front of you. The Viking Tour Express horse riding excursion is offered daily at 13:00, throughout the year. This 5-hour trip is only recommended for strong intermediate riders. Riders need to be comfortable and in control at all paces. The amount of actual riding time is around 2.5-3 hours, including stops. The minimum age for participation is 12 years. All guests are provided with warm overalls, raingear, riding boots, and helmets in the appropriate size. The Íshestar staff take pride in finding horses to suit individual needs as well as ensure the safety of all participants. Please note that backpacks, bags, or large cameras cannot be taken with you on the ride, but there are safety boxes at the Riding Centre where you can store valuables. For your safety please note that anyone under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs will not be permitted on the riding tour. Also, due to possible damage to an unborn child in the case of an accident, pregnant women are not permitted on the tour. All guests join the riding tour of their own free will and inform the tour guide of any conditions that might affect their ability to participate in the tour. If a group is divided during the ride parents must stay in the same group as their children. Weight limit for the tour is 110 kilograms or 250 pounds.

Your guide will pick you up at a hotel, guesthouse, or a close bus stop in Reykjavik(see bus stops here), and after you will head on this awesome journey. Thingvellir national parks is the first stop. This is where we got our independence, this is where we took Christianity, the first church in Iceland was built there and this is where the 2 tectonic plates that Iceland is located on, move apart from each other. Thingvellir is not an only natural beauty, but this place is filled with historical events throughout Iceland’s history. While you are in Iceland, there is a “must do” to try all the authentic Iceland has to offer. You get the chance to visit an Icelandic dairy farm and enjoy what Icelanders call, Made in satin”. That means enjoying food and products which the farmers make with their own hands. One of the farmers which are 3 sisters and 1 brother, will sit down with the small group and hold a presentation.
