Reykjavík: Volcano Eruption Site and Reykjanes Tour

1. Reykjavík: Volcano Eruption Site and Reykjanes Tour

Discover the beauty of volcanic landscapes in the Geldingadalur Valley on this day trip from Reykjavík. Travel by bus to Meradalir Volcano and go for a guided hike to see the new lava fields. Capture photos at locations like Lake Kleifarvatn, Valhnúkamöl Boulder Ridge, and the Gunnuhver Hot Springs. Start with a pickup in Reykjavík before heading on a scenic drive surrounded by breathtaking views. Stop by Lake Kleifarvatn to take in the black sand beach and surrounding mountains. Put on your high-quality hiking gear and set off towards Geldingadalur Valley to see the steaming, cooling lava fields formed by the recent eruption at Merdalir. The volcano erupted for much of August 2022, but has stopped for now. Please note that the hike is of moderate difficulty and takes 1.5-2 hours each way. Sit down to a delectable packed lunch on the hike where you can eat while gazing out over the immense lava fields surrounding the new crater. Drive by the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the volcanos have shaped the area which is covered by soft green lava moss. Continue to the Gunnuhver Hot Springs to breath in steam from the boiling waters. Make your way to the the oldest lighthouse in Iceland at Reykjanes Lighthouse. Admire the cliffs and sea stacks formed by the Atlantic Ocean at the Valhnúkamöl Boulder Ridge. Finally, see the Bridge Between Continents which crosses a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Get a picture of you walking across the bridge before returning to Reykjavík.

What people are saying about Hafnarfjörður

Superb experience! Guides Omar and Kiara, both passionate about their land and geology, led us to the eruption. They heeded government advice by staying above poison gas level. We were able to observe the eruption from afar but in complete safety. Highly recommend coming with good hiking shoes as the beginning is quite steep. The rest of the afternoon was very interesting and allowed us to discover the rest of the Reykjanes peninsula (hot spot, cliffs, lighthouse...). Thank you for this experience.

It was extremely good ---it was quite risky as lots of sharp rocks but Anna and Halter our tour guide made me comfortable and stayed throughout with me to help me out ---they were very knowledgeable about the area and volcano ---extremely good company and great people they have on staff ---would highly recommend them--they also told a lot about Iceland in general too

I absolutely loved it, it was the highlight of my trip. Hannes, our guide was very helpful and patient man. At the petrol station where all the buses meet, there was some confusion and we were waiting there for about an hour, however our guide did apologise for the delay.

This was a great activity but you need to be ready to walk. The path has loose rocks and sand so you can slip easily. Recommended to pay the sticks.

Very exciting tour, we visited the most recent lava field.
