Full description
Nicknamed the ‘rice bowl of Vietnam’, the Mekong River Delta is a flatland stretching from Ho Chi Minh’s southwest to the Gulf of Thailand. Orchards, paddy fields, and swamplands make up the rustic landscape of this verdant region, which is well worth exploring as an escape from Saigon’s street scenes. Start the trip with an early pick-up from your accommodations before heading to the first stop of the day Bỏng Cốm. Visit a local family and watch as they prepare some traditional Vietnamese snacks for us to try. Up next you’ll board a boat and head to Tan Phong Island, one of the more well-known islands in the Mekong Delta. Tan Phong is especially popular for its fruit orchards, aquaculture, and fishing. You’ll also pass by the floating market area and learn about its history and significance from your friendly guide. The next stop is an Ancient House, known by the locals as the old house of Mr. Kiet. This ancient house is almost 200 years old and has five bedrooms. The interiors of the house are intricately decorated with rare pieces of wood that are inlaid with numerous delicate carvings. After taking in the stunning architecture and decor, you’ll have a late lunch before departing for Ho Chi Minh and heading back to your accommodations.

We went with Suni to the Mekong Delta. They picked us up very punctually at the hotel where we were staying and took us there, where we took a boat to navigate the river. When we were on the way we were informed that we would not be able to see the floating markets because there are hardly any floating markets left. A pity because we had signed up for the activity to see them. Even so, we really enjoyed the tour getting to know the customs of the people of the Delta and we were able to see how they made certain local products such as candies, rice popcorn, hammocks and palm baskets. We also did a bike ride around the island, we really liked it. It has some quite touristy parts and is a bit pricey, but overall it's worth it and we'd recommend it.

If you are looking to explore the Mekong Delta but have limited time then this is a great tour. If you are booking specifically for the floating market then I think you will be disappointed. The market is basically a few barges & the only display are some samples of what they are selling tied to a mast. For flowers etc you will have to go during Tet but the market here generally is not as thriving as it once was. I did enjoy getting out on the water, especially exploring the smaller tributaries by rowing boat. The bike ride around the island was fun & you have the chance to visit a few local handicrafts spots. Unfortunately there was confusion over whether lunch was included. On my tour, we all assumed it was, or at least there would be choice. But the only option was to pay D220,000 for a big meal. The food was delicious but I think we all felt it was money that we had not planned for which left us feeling a little conned.
