Húsavík: Big Whales and Puffin Island Speedboat Tour

1. Húsavík: Big Whales and Puffin Island Speedboat Tour

Embark on a guided speedboat tour around Puffin Island. See the thousands of puffins in their natural habitat before heading to Skjálfandi Bay to spot whales with frequent sightings of humpback and minke whales. After check-in at the ticket office, be escorted to the dressing room to receive warm water-resistant overalls and life vests. Sit back and peel your eyes across the rocking waves of the Atlantic, looking for any sign of life. Make sure to bring hats and gloves—it's always colder in the bay than in the town. When everybody is ready the guide will show the way to the boat where passengers will find their seats and get informed about safety regulations on board. The first pit-stop is Puffin Island (during puffin season which is from 1st May- 20th August). Circle around the Island, enjoying the view of thousands of sweet-looking puffins during their breeding period. The next destination is whale watching in Skjálfandi Bay, an area renowned for its rich wildlife, Víknafjöll and Kinnarfjöll mountain ranges. There are 20 different species of cetacean in Iceland, the most common being humpback and minke whales. There is a chance to spot rarer species like Orcas, Harbour Porpoises, Blue Whales, etc. With a smaller vessel like a RIB, your captain can get much closer to where these animals swim as small boats make less noise, and are less likely to deter whales. After 2 hours of cruising the ocean, begin the return journey back to the harbor. On your way, you will likely pass one of the numerous nesting Puffin colonies that live in the area—just another fantastic reason to come aboard.

Excellent experience! We were very spoiled. We had booked 10 to 15 days before our visit for the 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. slot in an eco-responsible electric boat. What a pleasure to leave the port without the smell of fuel oil and without disturbing the whales thanks to the electric motor. The weather was cloudy but with very good visibility and above all a calm sea. We were well covered thanks to the lent fleece suits but the temperatures were mild. Very good guide knowing perfectly the life of marine animals and birds. We saw about ten whales, 2 or 3 of which were very close, as well as a few dolphins and puffins. Snack on the way back. The success of this walk is linked to the weather conditions. When stopping for whale watching in rough seas, the boat may pitch, so it is best to have sea legs. Finally, whale watching is random and depends on nature. Highly recommended outing.

It was very nice organized and informative trip. The weather was not perfect for us but the beauty of nature still impressed us to the maximum. Definitely worth it. Highly recommended if you want to experience the diamond circle !

Das Whalewatching war unglaublich. Wir haben viele Buckelwale sehr nahe erleben dürfen. Die Tour hat das beste Boot überhaupt, max 12 Personen und jeder Platz ist super! Wir können diese Tour nur weiterempfehlen!

Everything perfect - have already done several whale tours was the best so far!!!

Fantastic, got really close to the whales. Lovely experience, sense of humility.
