Húsavík: Big Whale Safari & Puffin Island Tour

1. Húsavík: Big Whale Safari & Puffin Island Tour

Embark on a guided whale watching tour to Puffin Island from Húsavík. Take in the views of this island on a speedboat ride and learn about the local marine life and puffins from an experienced guide. After you have been equipped with a warm safety overall and a life vest, step aboard a modern RIB speedboat to begin your exciting adventure. Head out to the beautiful surroundings of Skjálfandi Bay while your specialized guide demonstrates safety on-board and gives you live commentary on the sights encountered along the way. Your first visit will be Puffin Island during the nesting period (April 15 – August 20 approximately), where you can observe thousands of colorfully-beaked puffins, often called "the Clowns of the Ocean." The high speeds of your boat will make it more likely you will spot some of the bigger whales, such as the majestic blue whales and acrobatic humpback whales. Watching whales in their natural environment from a RIB speedboat is a unique experience.

2. Húsavík: Big Whales and Puffin Island Speedboat Tour

Get your warm clothes and get ready for a real adventure! The tour begins with a sail to the beautiful Skjálfandi Bay. There are many whale species that are known to be accommodated in the area. For example, the Humpback whale, the Minke whale, White-beaked dolphins, porpoises… More than 10 different species visit Skjálfandi every year! The speedy RIB boats make it more likely to have a close encounter with the giants, being able to drive huge amounts of miles in the trip. Also, with only 12 passengers or fewer on board, the competition for the best view on board is certainly eliminated. Among the places, we will visit Lundey (Puffin Island)*, known for its great amount of the popular bird. Passengers will also see the Tjörnes peninsula, known for its fossil layers with the most ancient one being two million years old! An expert whale-watching guide, a captain on board, a warm water-resistant overall suit, and a life vest are included in this trip. Bring your hat and gloves with you – the bay can be pretty cold! So, when will you join us? *Puffin season is ca. 15th of April-20th August. Outside that time of the year, our tours are Big Whales exclusive!

This was amazing! We did the night tour (9 PM) at the end of July. We were nervous that it would be too dark to see anything, but that was certainly not the case. The sunset and the mountains were beautiful. Parking was easy in front of the office and it was a short walk down to the water. When you first arrive, you will get suited up into a flotation device outfit. It also helps to keep you warm, although I would recommend bringing a hat and wearing warm clothes. After you get suited up, you head out to the boat and first visit a puffin nesting ground. There were tons of puffins. We then headed out to search for whales. We were lucky and saw three humpback whales. They were very active, which I think is partly due to it being dusk. We also saw some seals. Our guide was very knowledgable and taught us a lot about whales. I would highly recommend this tour, especially since it is on a speed boat, so it gives you a higher chance of seeing whales.

We were well prepared for the trip. You get warm suits and gloves are ready if you don't have your own. The captain already knew before the trip where it is likely to see a whale, which is why we went there right at the beginning. We not only saw a humpback whale (he dived up and down several times) but also several dolphins. You just have to keep in mind that from September there are no more puffins and it can get very cold on the boat. Although almost 140€ is a lot of money, it is definitely worth it and better compared to the huge cutters that go out and where several dozen people crowd the railing to try to see a whale. On this boat you are at most +2 with 12 passengers.

Unfortunately no big whales but lots of white-beaked dolphins and a couple harbour porpoises. Guide was v knowledgeable and the trip was great

Great experience! We saw several jumping whales! Well organized and with the RIB boat is also a really nice experience.

Very happy we booked this speedboat tour! Saw 2 whales and the boat ride itself was a lot of fun
