Full description
Download the audio guide to your smartphone before your visit to the Hagia Sophia. As you begin your visit at the entrance, first hear the story of the first churches originally built on the site. In the inner lobby, see the 9 gates that lead to the main place of worship within the building, as well as a beautiful mosaic of Emperor Leon VI of the 9th century. Make your way to the Sultan’s library, a marble room which was constructed in the 18th century by Mahmud I. Continue straight ahead and see the beautiful Omphalion. Meaning "the navel of the earth" this is a significant section of marble floor where the imperial golden throne is said to have been located. Continue by admiring the magnificent dome of the Hagia Sophia. With 40 windows allowing the sunlight into the massive structure, this is one of the highlights of the tour. Admire the mosaic of the Virgin and Child, where the Virgin Mary is dressed in blue and portrayed youthful and beautiful as a Byzantine princess, while Christ is dressed in gold. Make your way to the Empress’s seat where you will learn more about the independent Byzantine empresses who ruled the empire. Before you exit see the "Beautiful Door" that belonged once to the ancient temple and was the exclusive entrance for many Emperors. Concluding the tour, you see the small baptistery, believed to be the site where the members of the imperial family were baptized.
