Full description
The ideal way to experience Meteora’s unique beauty and interesting rock formations is by walking, as it is the only way to really observe the impressive rock formations and strange patterns. On a half-day guided hike, you will be taken up close to these structures and led directly to the best vantage points in the area. After being transported from Kalampaka, the hiking tour begins from Kastraki Square, continuing to Dupiani Hermitage. Pass below the ruined Pantokratoros Monastery on the north side of Dupiani's rock, arriving at the Ypapanti Monastery and the ruins of St. Dimitrios, a monastery destroyed by the Ottomans in 1808 during a local uprising. From there, the trail leads all the way up to the impressive Great Meteoro and Varlaam monasteries, 2 of 6 total Eastern Orthodox monasteries in the area, all part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour the grounds, and afterward, go down from Varlaam to St. George the Madilas to see the place where the local children climb with only a rope to dedicate offerings to St. George.

Excellent hiking tour! Our guide, Christos, was very knowledgeable about everything from the monasteries to the geology to the plants, and also shared many fun stories about climbing in the area. I wouldn't call this an easy hike - a bit over 5 hours and very steep steps/trail coming down from the monastery - but perfectly doable for anyone with some hiking experience. The route was mostly shaded, which was wonderful.

A scenic uphill walk, mostly shaded, that anyone with good mobility can easily accomplish. Lots of stops for photos and information (from a knowledgable guide) that made the walk very enjoyable. Allowed time for entrance to one monastery (3 euro entrance fee not included) but be sure to bring a skirt (ladies) or you will be required to purchase one for 3.50 euro.

Very informative walk with a funny guide with high knowledge about history and botanics. Though I'm not very fit he enabled everyone to have an enjoyable day. Ypsilanti disappointed me a bit, because there is not much to see. However, the views very perfect. After the tour I needed a shower and relaxing time.
