This route starts by taking off from Sinj airport, flying over the city of Sinj and the beautiful field of Sinj. This paradise of water, fields, and stone hides some of the most endemic species of flora and fauna in Croatia. Landscapes and underground of the Cetina River are rich with everlasting, sage, heather, and thyme. You might even see the Sinj fortress which was historically a very important location. Heading on to Split where you'll be flying over Klis fortress. On the cliffs between Mosor and Kozjak stands the Klis fortress. It was built on an extraordinary strategic location that allowed military control over the Klis valley. Klis fortress has been beautifully preserved in whole. After flying past Klis fortress, you will see the city of Split, with its green oasis Marjan. You will even see the island of Brač and the island of Šolta. You will see amazing blue seas below! Split is the second biggest city in Croatia and the largest ferry port. It is the cultural and economic center of the region. Largest green surface in Split, Marjan was declared a Park Forest in 1964. According to archaeological findings, it was inhabited as early as prehistory. Pieces of prehistoric pottery were found here. Also discovered are remnants of the temple of Diana – the goddess of the hunt. Until the 15th century, Marjan was covered with forest. Due to expansions of settlements, wars, and Turkish conquests, arson, and clearing, Marjan became a barren wasteland in only two centuries. Reforestation commenced by planting the first pines in 1852. As years passed, the forest was renewed and the animals returned. The first sea aquarium was founded on Marjan in 1928. After flying over Split the end of your flight will take you over the small town of Solin. Solin was the capital of Roman providence. However, Solin (or Salona) disappeared at the end of the middle ages never to be renewed again. Today it is a town of rich cultural heritage from ancient Salona (forum with temples, amphitheater, and graveyards with Salonitan martyrs) to the Middle age, time of queen Jelena and Trpimirović dynasty, the coronation of Zvonimir as King of Dalmatia and Croatia. Located by the river Jadro, Solin today is and youngest town in Croatia. It has been visited by Pope John Paul II in 1998. Afterward, you will fly towards the western side of Split where you can see some magnificent beaches of Split. Popular sandy beaches, pebbled beaches, rocky places, all can be found in Split. This is an area that attracts more visitors each year, primarily thanks to the traditional Tilters Tournament of Sinj (Sinjska Alka). The flight starts over Sinj and continues along the Cetina River. The source of the river is a karst spring. Cetina has its source in the northwestern slopes of Dinara, in a small village called Cetina. The river is mostly calm with stunning landscapes. Next fly over the town of Trilj. This area also has become increasingly popular with tourists. It offers outdoor activities like Cetina River fishing, canoeing, rafting, horseback riding, cycling, and hiking. Afterward, the plane turns to Imotski, flying over the karstic landscapes that in a few minutes turn into a fertile valley bordered by the rocky plateaus. Imotski is a town situated on the northern side of Biokovo massif in Dalmatia hinterlands. It is a nice little town to visit. There are two lakes near Imotski – the Blue Lake and Red Lake, each one named for the color of the landscape around its borders. After the flight over the lakes, the route takes you to the town of Omiš. Omiš is situated at the Canyon of Cetina River. Omiš is widely known for its glorious pirate history and serves as a reminder of the times when pirates used to control Omiš. The main landmark remaining from the pirates stands proudly over the town – the fortress of Mirabela. Pirates of Omiš used the fortress as a lookout so that merchant ships couldn’t stay unnoticed when sailing along the coastline. The flight continues along the coastline towards the Split suburbs. The west coast of Split is the extension of Split’s Riva to the west. Enjoy a magnificent view of Split and luxury yachts. Next on the route is the Klis fortress, which served as a major source of defense in Dalmatia, especially in the middle ages. The fortress is one of the most outstanding fortresses in Croatia and it is beautifully preserved. If you have time, you can easily spend a few hours walking around. Finally, return to the town of Sinj. You will probably see Fortress of Sinj which offers one of the nicest views in the area. You can see all of the Cetina River and the surrounding villages. If you are interested in visiting the Dalmatian hinterlands this is the best way to give you a preview of what you can expect.
