Full description

Wawel Castle was the residence of the royal family of Poland till 1795. It is a source of great Polish pride and stands as one of the most spectacular buildings on the top of Wawel Hill.

During your tour of the castle, you will get the chance to witness the grandeur of Poland’s past as you pass through the magnificent halls of the castle.

Presently, the castle also houses a museum that includes beautiful artifacts preserved from the historic times when kings and queens ruled the country. During your tour, you may also visit the Royal private apartments adorned with exquisite tapestries, paintings, and chandeliers.

The castle serves as a premier art museum and also includes an Oriental Art section with the largest collection of Ottoman tents on the European continent.

This 14th-century castle built by King Casimir II the Great was at the top of its opulence in the 16th century when King Sigismund the Old commissioned the castle to be expanded and built into what it looks like today.

Once you are in the castle, you will be transported into the era of kings and queens as your guide shares information about the royals who once lived in the castle and the myths surrounding this beautiful place.

You may also get to see the Wawel exhibition, which displays objects uncovered during archaeological excavations around the region. It also includes scale models of buildings and other architectural elements.

Wawel Castle is recognized as a Unesco World Heritage site and is known to have immense cultural and historical significance in Poland.

We met with who we thought was our guide and a small group of three other people at the address sent to us upon booking. We were taken upto the castle very promptly (almost too quickly as there was a steep hill) and we felt we were unable to take in the sights on our way up. We waited around for 10minutes and in this time was able to take photos of the courtyard and was told that our actual guide would be along momentarily. We then proceeded to join another small group and was introduced to the planned itinerary for the tour. Upon booking the castle there are many different options; we selected to do the apartments only as we felt that the tour was extremely long if we’d booked the armoury and other rooms. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable but we felt like the tour focused mainly on the paintings and furnishings inside the castle rather than the building and historical events that took place there. Overall it was ok if you love art and the rooms were very similar.

Castle was beyond expectations and was magnificent. A definite must see, seeing the original ruins from 12th century was something else. The only negative was our guide seemed much more interested in telling us about the painting rather than over all knowledge so we ended up wondering a little to make sure we found out general information

Knowledgeable tour guide used an effective audio headset which allowed us to hear everything even though there were other groups around. Because of the crowds, you have to keep moving. For me personally, the castle was not as grandiose as I expected but good tour nonetheless.
