Carcassonne was settled as early as the 6th century BC and later became an important Roman town. It was fortified in the 4th century and was a strategic site in the Middle Ages. It took on its definitive shape in the 13th century with the king’s decision to construct the distinctive double-walled ramparts and extend the castle. The city was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and is a testimony to 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,500 years of history. Left in ruins after the the Cathar Crusade (1209-1229), the Inquisition and exile of the Trencavel family, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was commissioned by the French state in 1844 to restore the city of Cathar. Completed in 1911 under the direction of his pupil Paul Boeswillwald, the royal city was returned to its original splendor, finally being inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1997. What people are saying about Languedoc-Roussillon

Take the virtual history tour~10-15 min, but very informative. About 5 euros. There is no walking tour or tour guide for the castle. Some things are in English, but there is much only in French. A translator app for those signs will help tremendously. The inquisition museum(s) are pretty good. You must realize that along with the incredible views there was also a lot of death and torture here. History buffs will really enjoy it.

our guide, Florence, made the tour an unforgettable experience. She explained all issues with a deep knowledge and in an interesting way. she had an excellent English. She was very attentive to our questions and wishes. the tour was well organized, has good balance between the the visiting time and the ride to them. the car was comfortable and suited the number of passengers.

We had a wonderful time touring the city walks with our guide. While she explained English was not her best language she did a great job and was very informative. Gave us a much better understanding of the timeline of the city and its history.

Purchased the ticket a day before! I was scan and go in, there was no line to begin with.

Harry’s tour was great. A lot of information but it is really interesting for me
