Etna: Craters of the 2002 Eruption Trekking Experience

1. Etna: Craters of the 2002 Eruption Trekking Experience

The starting point of the trekking route is along the dirt road that runs from Provenzana to the summit craters of the volcano. The first stop will allow you to see the ruins of the Hotel delle Betulle, the only visible structure from those destroyed by the lava flow of October 2002. Take your time studying the varying volcanic forms as you follow the route. Hear about how they are related to the series of eruptions on the northern side of Etna, particularly the flank eruptions in 1911 and 1923. The later occurrence threatened the city of Linguaglossa. After visiting the particular volcanic structures, called hornitos (small oven in Spanish), go up along the Bottoniera (cinder cones) of the 2002 eruption. Reach the maximum height of 2,100 meters and stand at the edge of the craters. Descend Mount Etna through a sandy channel to arrive back at the starting point.

Visit 2 traditional Italian wineries on this full-day group tour from Taormina. At the second winery, taste 3 DOP (Protected Denomination of Origin) Etnean wines, paired with a complete lunch based on traditional products. Walk around the winery, see the barrels where the wine you’ve just tasted is stored, and learn more about the wine-making process. Finally, you’ll head home to Taormina at around 5:00 PM.

Very warm welcome, well organized tasting, with a good little accompaniment of cheeses and vegetables. Nice presentation of the wines in French (it's rare on the island!) Quick tour of the cellar Nice setting and beautiful view of the vineyards and the sea further on.

Nice walk at a pace at which everybody can keep up. We learnt a lot of interesting things about how a volcano works. Vincenzo is very Nice and explains everything very well. We just loved it!

Great easy walk on the Etna. Impressive when you are the 2002 crater. Very good and interesting explanation by our guide Daniele.

We had a very nice guide, Danielle, who caught everything well. The tour is not strenuous and informative.
