Full description

The magnificent Old Royal Naval College is one of London’s most famous landmarks. This riverside masterpiece was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and the spectacular architecture means that it has become one of the most popular film &TV locations in the world, including The Crown, Les Miserables, Thor: The Dark World, Cruella, Bridgerton and many more. It is home to the breath-taking 17th century Painted Hall that has over 40,000 square feet of painted walls and ceilings which took 19 years to complete (known at the UK’s Sistine Chapel). Take a fascinating tour from an expert guide of the incredible riverside estate, including the exquisite 18th century chapel. Discover the estate’s 500 years of history: from a manor house in 1420’s, glimpse the excavated remains of its time as Greenwich Palace, built for Henry VII and the birthplace of Henry VIII; to the story behind the current extensive array of impressive classical buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1694 as a Royal Hospital for Seamen. If you visit between 12-3pm, why not test your skills at one of the oldest remaining Victorian Skittle Alleys in the UK, which was originally built to entertain the Naval pensioners in 1864

The audio visual guide is excellent. You can lie back on the seats in the hall so that you can properly study the details of the paintings. If you have booked a 10am tour, don't arrive too early as there is no sign of life until a couple of minutes before that.

We were hugely impressed by the Painted Hall, in fact we gained more out of the visit than we had done last year visiting the treasures of Rome because although there were a lot of people, our guide was so interesting that we learned an enormous amoount.

The Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich is an incredible place to visit, with so much to see. The Painted Hall is a must see which left me in awe. The amazing restoration work was so well worth it. We also had a fantastic tour of the whole site with a wonderful guide called Isabel. She was so knowledgeable and very interesting to listen to. We learned so much from her and she exudes such enthusiasm and love for the college and environs. We were also directed to look at the Queen's House which we also thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely a fascinating place to visit and explore.
