Matera: Sassi di Matera Historical Self-Guided Audio Tour

9. Matera: Sassi di Matera Historical Self-Guided Audio Tour

The Sassi (literally Stones) of Matera extend over two valleys and constitute a very particular urban agglomeration made up of natural caves that, over time, have been further excavated by man. Caves and ravines have been used since the Neolithic as dwellings, shelters, natural refuges and places for worship. The use of caves for housing purposes continued during the Middle Ages right up to modern times'. During the Middle Ages, small communities of lay people and monks from Armenia, Syria, Cappadocia and Asia Minor, persecuted in their lands, took refuge in these caves which became places for worship decorated with Byzantine frescoes. The area was enriched with oriental art and culture and further 'rock churches' were built. In the area of Matera there are 155 and the expression 'rock art' reaches its peak. In the period of time following the Second World War, almost twenty-thousand people still populated the Sassi. In 1952 the "Sassi Law" allocated funds for its complete restoration but it was such a hard task. Many writers have described how difficult it was to 'remove the inhabitants from the ravines they had lived in' for many generations.

What people are saying about Matera

There is a rain forefast on my booked date and i appreciate about choices (other days)offered that would fit in my schedule. Hassle-free communication esp on pick-up, good recommendations in each places covered on the tour, top transport (safety/music). Enzo did great throughout the tour, definitely not a "hectic type" of guide which is a good thing as you wont feel any rush on the tour. Yes there are specific time-frame in each places but he was clear and even shared location for you to return to meeting/pick up point on time.

Enzo is a great guide! He talks with a lot of passion about his native land and knows a lot about the area. He has original ideas about places he wouldn't normally go to. Furthermore, he is punctual, flexible and responds immediately to messages. He is a pleasant conversationalist with a lot of humor. I recommend the tour with Enzo 100%. I enjoyed it. Thank you again Enzo!!

This is the best option if you want to see both Alberobello and Matera in one day. Enzo also suggested we made a stop at Polignano a Mare which was absolutely worth it. Altogether it was an amazing experience with the nicest guide possible (good soundtrack as well). Highly recommend.

Enzo was the best! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. Enzo was very knowledgeable and timely and made our trip so memorable. Thank you Enzo - looking forward to a return trip!

Exciting, very enjoyable and overall a great day sightseeing. Enzo’s recommendations for the places visited, the restaurant for lunch and his insights as we travelled were all excellent. Thank you Enzo!
