Mexico City: Half-Day Market Secrets and Salsa Making Tour

1. Mexico City: Half-Day Market Secrets and Salsa Making Tour

It’s time for a food adventure. Mexico City’s markets are some of the most vibrant places in the city, and this tour opens them up to you, just as locals experience them. Your first stop on your Mexico City tour is a relatively unknown market that boasts a large art collection depicting the political movement from the first half of the 1900s. Your guide will explain the importance of the murals and bridge the gap between the political movement of that period with what is going on in today’s Mexico. After this, travel the city just like the locals do, by riding the public metro. This market boasts an unmatched selection of flowers – you’ll be mesmerized by the variety and by the vendors, who will be all too happy to help you match the perfect bouquet to your eye color. You’ll also find fruits, herbs, meat, fish, pinatas and more, all for sale among the various stalls. You might even find a love potion available amid all the goods. Along the way, you’ll also get to sample some classic Mexican street foods, such as tacos and tamales, along with a coffee or atole – a traditional warm drink made from masa. After buying some fresh vegetables (and learning about local farming practices), head over to a local family business, where you’ll learn how to prepare your own salsa. Together, you’ll wash, cut and grill the ingredients, then smash them in the traditional way, using a molcajete (mortar and pestle). Taste your homemade salsa with a classic huarache.

If you ever wondered about cacao beans and the chocolate process, this is the tasting tour for you. My husband and two children were so very impressed with the entire tasting experience. We learned how and where the cacao grows, why it's planted near fruit trees, the fermentation process, the different ways that cacao is cured in order for it to develop different flavors, what types of foods and fruits it can be paired with for the ultimate tasty experience. We tried cacao beans at different stages, then enjoyed a delectable tasting of 6 different chocolates from 100% dark chocolate to white chocolate. We then paired the chocolates with cheeses, with fruits, veggies (won't share which so as to not spoil the incredible surprise!), and with champagne. We topped the two hours with a cup of warm, spicy hot chocolate. After drinking that I felt like a goddess! So very much recommend this incredible experience with Oscuro Puro!

This was such a unique, hands-on and authentic experience. Eren our guide/chef was fabulous. The group was small, which I appreciated, and the food was delicious. I am not a good cook, but that wasn’t an issue, and my partner loves to cook and he learned a lot. We were inspired to try the dishes at home. Also, the booking experience with GYG was super easy.

The tour of the two markets was really nice and we were able to try a few things. Our tour guide also told a few things that were really great. Unfortunately, I was hoping for a little more from the cooking. We all formed a corn cake, filled it with a bean paste and then grilled it. Was very tasty but not what I had promised

It was very informative, friendly and fun tour incorporating history, archeology, city sightseeing the locals do it and food tastings with a small cooking class. The food was delicious. There were so many things packed in these 5 hours so I would highly recommend it. Ana

Wonderful tour, highly recommend. My kids loved it too!
