Full description

See the stunning Aeolian Archipelago on a day trip to the islands of Vulcano and Lipari from Milazzo. Take a boat to Lipari and go on a walk in the Old Town. Then, sail to the UNESCO-listed chain of volcanic islands. Enjoy a mud bath in Vulcano, swim in the Tyrrhenian Sea, or relax on the beach.

Discover the 2 beautiful Liparian Islands north of the coast of Sicily. Begin your tour in the morning at the Port of Milazzo and set out along the foothills of Capo Milazzo to Lipari. Explore the land with its wonderful old town and archaeological park. Walk down the little streets and wander into tiny shops. Admire the impressive needle- and cone-shaped rock formations of Faraglioni, Pope John Cliff, the Angels' Grotto, and the Mummy Cliff. Then return to your ship and continue on to the island of Vulcano. Relax here in the sulfuric mud spa or on the dreamlike black sand beach, or enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. On your way back to Milazzo, enjoy one last view of the picturesque town of Gelso with its antique lighthouse.

Be sure to hike up to the church, plaza and viewpoints at the top of the hill when you get to the town on Lipari island. One takes the right road off the plaza after one gets off the boat rather than the left one which takes one to a fairly uninteresting tourist street. It is quite an adventure up on top of the hill. There are also a few archaeological museums up there. However, we were happy just walking around and exploring and looking at the views over the cliffs. On the island of Volcano we just crossed the island which is about 150 m across, went to the beach on the right side of the road and rented two reclining chairs with an umbrella. They had change rooms which were nice. The water was absolutely delightful. It is definitely worth the five euros per person to rent the reclining chairs and umbrella. So the fun and excitement of exploring a very old town is complemented by a relaxing time swimming at the beach.

Better boat trip than expected as made a circuit around Volcano and pulled in very close to give everyone a great view of coastal rock features. Ran well to time and provides enough time to look around the centre of Lipari and then have beach time / snorkel on Volcano.

Nothing was explained in english, so we did not get any information onboard the ship (unlike the Italians who seemed to have gotten plenty). Otherwise a fine boat trip with easy to find pick up and hop off points, as well as well-chosen time slots for each island. The boat was quite full, so try to be there early. We were punctual and almost didn’t get a seat! Part of the sulfur beach (and the bubble bath in front of it) are currently closed, which was not advertised in the activity description.
