Full description
Pick-up time is 10:30AM, you should arrive about 12:15PM at Oak Alley Plantation where you will have an hour of free time to get lunch and walk the grounds. The Oak Alley house tour starts at 1:30PM until 2:15PM. Then you take a short 10-minute drive to Laura Plantation, the tour begins at 2:40PM. You will return to New Orleans around 6:00PM. Oak Alley Plantation was built in 1837 and has 28 evenly spaced Oaks that line a quarter of a mile path from River Road to the plantation house. There are additional attractions on the grounds including a restaurant, cafe and gift shop. The choice is yours how you would like to use your free hour. Laura Plantation was built and operated by four Creole women. The main house burned down in 2003, an exact replica was built using wood and materials from other antique buildings. The rebuilding of the plantation house is a story in itself. Slave quarters are a part of this unique tour.

This tour was well worth the trip. Oak Alley is a beautiful home and the huge oak trees are spectacular. With touring the home, viewing the grounds and peripheral buildings, time for lunch was limited so plan accordingly. While Laura is the smaller of the two homes, it was perhaps the most interesting and enjoyable. Both tour guides were knowledgeable and interesting. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area.

SCENARIOS FROM "VIA COL VENTO"

This tour exceeded my expectations! Started well from the start, no problem with hotel pickup with extra comfort van! The driver (woman) was also the guide and was very good and professional. There were a few people of various nationalities and the whole day was pleasant and well organized. The plantations are a must visit when in New Orleans because the landscape is superb. The villas are well preserved and still active in the production of sugar cane. The only disappointment is the guides inside the villas: they really go too far making you lose interest in the history of the place. They should do as in other parts of the world and organize themselves with audio guides available in various languages (including Italian).

Return to Plantations was better than in years past.

Several years ago, we did the Oak Alley/Laura plantations tour. I remember it being pleasurable, but rushed. This particular outing seemed to provide ample time to both see the plantations, and wander around a bit. This was particularly important at Oak Alley, because time is needed to grab a bite for lunch. If anything, the Laura plantation tour was a little long. We could have used an extra 20 minutes to SHOP (and I'm sure the facility would have been appreciative of that as well).. But, as it worked out, the rest of our tour group was ready to go 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time (I think everyone was just tired... it's a long outing on a hot/humid day)... Trip was fun and informative... and locations were very picturesque.
