Full description

Discover one of the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites with a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel abbey. Explore the site with a self-guided tour aided by an information booklet and learn the fascinating history of the site entirely at your own pace.

The worship of Saint Michel was introduced on the holy mount in 708 and it became one of the most important places of medieval pilgrimage. Benedictine Monks began building an abbey here in the 10th century.   The abbey has withstood the assaults of man, time, and the elements. The heroic resistance of the mount to English attacks during the Hundred Years’ War (14th and 15th centuries) made it a symbol of French national identity.

Monks left the abbey in 1790 and it was listed as a historic monument in 1874. The whole site has been returned to its former glory thanks to ongoing restoration work.

I went by car, but I found out that I needed to make a reservation for admission on the day, so I got a ticket about an hour before the day. It was troublesome that I couldn't open the ticket without downloading the app, but I was able to buy the ticket right away, and above all, I was able to make a reservation with confidence because it was a Japanese site.

This was an excellent way of avoiding the queues to enter what is certainly the highlight of Mont-Sant-Michel, the Abby. We walked straight in and picked up our audio guide and paper pamphlet about the site. We were a bit confused about entering Mont-Sant-Michel itself. For those driving, like we did, you park around 2.5km walk, or shuttle ride, to Mont-Sant-Michel. The lines to ride the shuttle were extremely long, so we walked which was lovely. There is a boardwalk most of the way there. And this eradicates the need to enter according to the tides, which we’d thought was maybe necessary! Once on Mont-Sant -Michel, it’s a steep walk up to the top, where the Abby is located. We had a wonderful time there. Magical.

Mont Saint Michel is an absolute must see if you go to France. An amazing feat of architecture, and absolutely stunningly beautiful! The story of the monks that have inhabited it over the years is beautiful as well. I recommend go in the evening when there are fewer crowds, and not on a Wednesday or Thursday as those are the most crowded days. But it is well worth the time and effort and just an awesome site! It has actually been turned into a little city with restaurants and shops, etc. So there is plenty for everyone to take in.
